Apparently being caught lying on your resume brings out the venomous side in Sen. Clinton.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, in a wide-ranging interview today with Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporters and editors, said she would have left her church if her pastor made the sort of inflammatory remarks Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor made. The problem for Hillary is that this plays into the larger metanarrative about her campaign, that she'll do or say anything to get elected. She's smart enough to realize that dragging the Rev. Wright matter back into the news makes her look petty and despicable, but in the end it's probably the best option she has for two reasons."He would not have been my pastor," Clinton said. "You don't choose your family, but you choose what church you want to attend."
The Clinton campaign had refrained from getting involved in the Wright controversy, but Clinton herself, responding to a question this morning, denounced what she said was "hate speech."
For one, slinging mud out of sheer desperation reinforces a negative perception, but it's a more favorable one than the emerging storyline that she's a chronic liar whose falsehoods cut to the very notion of her campaign strategy that she's more "experienced" (Never mind the fact that were she to be judged by her own definition of "experience", she'll lose to John McCain in November). Moreover, for a lot of Clinton's supporters, her willingness to engage in character assassination is considered an asset in November. For Obama supporters, this makes her look like an asshole, but Clinton's base (the "fight fire with fire" wing of the DNC) will see this as another example of her being "tough".
Of course, the other upside for Clinton is that in distracting attention away from embarrassing news, she refocuses attention on the emerging right-wing meta-narrative that Barack Obama is unpatriotic. This has been the thread that unites many of the right-wing smears against Obama, from the "lapel pin" flap, to Michelle Obama's comments about being proud of America "for the first time", to the Obama singing the national anthem without his hand over his heart, to Rev. Wright's "God Damn America" comments.
Now in their efforts to use the "Tonya Harding option" against Obama, the Clintons have resorted to doing the GOP's work for them. Just last week, Bill implied that Obama, unlike McCain and Hillary, doesn't "love this country". Now Hillary is dragging the Wright matter back into the spotlight. These sort of attacks make perfect sense for the party that turned a yellow ribbon magnet into a form of wartime sacrifice, but are Bill and Hillary Clinton really buing into the notion that a patriot should be judged by his ostentatious and self-aware displays of nationalistic fervor? Or are they just throwing a bunch of shit at the wall and hoping something sticks?
Contrasting the two dominant meta-narratives, it seems that Obama is the one with the upper hand here. After all, unlike Hillary Clinton's weasely admission that she merely "misspoke" in her tall tales on the stump, Obama has already addressed the Wright matter in a straightforward manner (as more than 3 million YouTube viewers can attest). Bringing this up again runs the risk of making Hillary look foolish, like in the Ohio debate when she criticized Obama for "denouncing", but not "rejecting", Louis Farrakhan. Rather than get caught up in Hillary's silly word games, Obama just pithily insisted that he would "reject and denounce". It was a moment in which a nation's eyes rolled in unison. Whatever, Hillary.
While the "Obama isn't patriotic" storyline will have some staying power (if only to give the bobbleheads a way to burn-up airtime between commercials until November), the notion that Obama doesn't sufficiently love his country is pretty stupid on its face and will only really have legs with voters who would never vote for him in the first place. Like the Farrakhan exchange, it's a narrative so childish that it can only be rejected through mockery. "Sure," I can imagine Obama saying, "I hate America so much...I'm running for President."
Yet, here we are, in the tail end of a primary season in which the losing challenger for the Democratic nomination has sunk to reinforcing right-wing smears against her party's likely nominee in a transparent attempt to distract the media from the fact that she's been caught in multiple lies about her experience. Granted, Hillary Clinton lost her chance to win my vote long ago, but I can't help but wonder how favorably superdelegates will look upon a former frontrunner cutting off her nose to spite her face.

Like her or not, Hillary has done Obama a favor by bringing this up now. If Obama gets the nomination, the Republicans will quadruple what she has done. Mark my words, they will run ads showing Wright's anti-American diatribes/ shots of Obama standing beside him, then Michelle Obama's "for the FIRST time, I'm proud of my country" statement--and this may well kill his chances. I'm for Obama, yet have real questions of why he stayed in that church. The first time he heard such drivel, he should have gotten up and left. That being said, I think he is a brilliant man who would make a good President. This latest Hillary attack gives him a chance to sharpen his response, before facing the Republican attack machine in the Fall. Thanks, Hillary.
I disagree that Hillary's dissing Obama and praising McCain is good for Obama or good for the Democratic party. Sure, McCain and his surrogates are going to say things about Obama, but Democrats will dismiss that as expected Republican talk. But now the Republicans can say "look what a Democrat said about Obama" and play Hillary's statements right in their ads. Further, i do not agree that the Republicans will dig up any dirt on Obama that Hillary hasn't already dug up and flung.
Obama can say he has been vetted by surviving Hillary's and Bill's attacks.
I think he stayed in that church because it's really more of a church than it is a sleeper cell for the Black Panthers so he saw no reason to leave that church. Obama knows the full embodiment of Rev. Wright while 99.99% of all people that know him now only recently made aware of his existence, knows him from less than a minute in total of his entire life's work.
The serious point here is that people vote without any real basis of fact. Many people base their vote on the 2 seconds of a news telecast that they hear from the other room in the brief silence between loading the dishwasher and turning it on.
I don't understand why people are still so afraid of the Republican attack machine as you call it. This is exactly the kind of politics people are sick of. I really don't think everyone should be so worried about McCain getting elected this fall. He will, and is showing his true colors and will sink himself. I hate to say this but McCain appears to be showing signs of Alzheimers.
Bush has already raised 3/4 billion dollars for the Republicans.
Don't you think the $50-$100 million per month we are spending on this primary would be useful, especially since the DNC has NOTHING?
I am reminded of one thing that Joseph Welsh said to Sen. Joseph McCarthy:
"Until this moment, senator, I think I never gauged your cruelty or recklessness....Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"
Sadly Hillery does not.
Huffpick for sure.
Was it Hillary who is responsible for the deaths of 4,000 Americans with an illegal war because of phony weapons of mass destruction? Was is she who said "The smoking gun will be a mushroom cloud? Was it she who caused a depression by financing this illegal war on margin? Was it she who dropped taxes for the very rich during wartime? Was it she who permitted gas price doubling while doing nothing about it or energy in general? Is it she who will continue the disastrous policy that brought this country to the brink of ruin? Before you join the right-wing press and pile on Hillary, remember who the real enemy of the American people (except the wealthiest 1%) is. As for me, I can vote for either and gladly.
Georgie Bush is alive, well and blissfully unaware of the suffering he's caused. His M.O. will continue with McCain. Even now, we have his variation of "Mission Accomplished" and that is "The surge is working." Keep dumping on Hillary and you'll have that for the next four years.
We'll have that for the next four years if Hillary is elected president. She's not going to end this war. She has already sold herself to the lobby that wants this war to continue. I have no confidence that she will end the war in Iraq. Of all of the Democratic candidates, she is the one I least trust to end the war.
Umm..Hillary authorized Dumbya to invade Iraq with her senate vote. She never spoke out against this fake war. Keep being in denial though. Thats all you Clinton supporters are good for.
Are you saying Hillary doesn't have ANY responsibility for the deaths? For the war? For the oil prices? She VOTED for the AUMF. And if by some miracle she steals the nomination and wins the election, she'll continue the war, too.
On the contrary, if Hillary keeps dumping on Obama and supporting McCain as she did in her '"experience" remark, indicating she and McCain had it and Obama didn't, she seems to be doing her best to get McCain elected. So she with her vote for preemptive war in Iraq and for the Kyl-Lieberman amendment and "bomb, bomb, bomb bomb iran" McCain have experience. In my opinion, this type of experience is trumped by Obama's judgment.
Desperation is not an attractive quality. Hillary seems to exude desperation. It's my take that had she taken and held the high-ground and defended Obama as a worthy opponent she would be better positioned than she is. She seems ready to sacrifice anything to meet her goal and that would include Obamas chances of beating McCain by feeding McCain with all the ammunition he needs to attack Obama. Can't you just hear it? " Hey...Even your own fellow Democrat attacks you on this !"
As a non-American (said with a sigh of relief) I have no axe to grind save for a desire for a more sane regime to take the place of what passes for one at present.
Senator Clinton seems petty, desparate, power hungry, selfish, jealous, dishonest...or same point stated another way - she is running like a Republican. McCain is showing class, even if he is trumpeting false Iran/ Seria ties to al-Qaeda. But I have this awful feeling that McCain is going to offer the VP spot to Hillary should she loose. It really would be a brilliant strategic maneuver considering Obama is the "unification" candidate. But that would just show that she has no love of anything other than ambition and power. Furthermore, it would confirn what I have been saying all along - she is really a center-right candidate who wears the Democratic brand name.
HuffPost's Pick
Something just doesn't smell right about this whole Obama-Rev. Wright incident. I would sure like to know whose fingerprints are all over that first video. Has anybody heard anything about the media investigating who was actually behind the first "anonymous" Rev. Wright compilation on YouTube? I've heard nothing; nobody questioning who the original poster was; what affiliations he or she may have. If you think about it, they had to be pretty determined in what they did: They had to go through countless hours of sermons by Rev. Wright, find the most incendiary snippets, compile them into a video, then post it on YouTube. It doesn't seem to be a casual effort by a "concerned patriot" to me.
Remember the senate page scandal in 2006? There was an anonymous person behind that bombshell as well, until the media investigated and found out who it was.
It certainly makes one wonder...
Reasoned,
Sadly, I believe the Hannity claims to have broken the story (or part of it) last year. I am not certain though and I am told by friends in Chicago that the church was well known for its liberation theology and, if so, there is no surprise that someone (most likely a Republican or Clintonista) decided to look into it. The sermons were (and probably still are) for sale by the church itself and that is how it all got out.
Someone probably bought them and I would bet my life upon it that some Republican group (I am a Republican) or other has bought everything the church is selling and going through it to see what they find. I am also certain that news outlets are doing the same thing as I write.
Someone always sets the ball rolling, but if the church didn't sell the tapes Obama would have been much better off.
Be well.
I have been asking everyone the same question. It seems very odd that no one in the media cares to know.
Does the source of the message change the message. I do not care if Rev. Wright only said God damn America once from the pulpit, it would be important to me. Look at the one misspeak by someone like Geraldine Ferraro and she has to resign. I am glad the tapes were released- they were actually available to the public from the Church itself. What if someone did not out Obama. Many would never know the type and kind of philosophy he dines on. I cannot take all the space necessary here to recite all of those characters
It depends on what the meaning of "one misspeak" is. Ferraro kept regurgitating the same spiel in indignant and deafening tones on each talk show she appeared. "Multiple misspeaks," more like.
Of course the source matters, especially when the message is deliberately distorted by taking 10-second sound bites out of 40 minute sermons and when the MSM never check the context, much less correct the false impression that this piece of rank propaganda leaves. The source of the YouTube montage was created by three neo-con Republican operatives who explained that they were just "having fun." If we had a responsible MSM, this smear would have been corrected within a single news cycle. If you were a responsible participant in the electoral process, you would have taken one of the many opportunities available on this site to check out the context yourself and you would not be perpetuating this rabid and disgusting slander of Obama, his minister and his church.
Does it matter. Why are you afraid of the truth!
I asked this very same question a long time ago - on several posts (although msnbc and abc did not post it) several weeks ago...I have yet to get an answer, either.
Note, however, that early in the year, one of the articles I read stated that a Clinton campaigner mentioned something Clinton had on Obama that she did not want to use just yet - the campaigner said how Clinton had made this comment last year. It was shortly after the article that the 'snipet' came out about Rev. Wright. Draw your own conclusions...
Until I see an article about how Obama has divided the party by implying that Hillary is "unethical" as much as I have seen the outrage that she has reminded people that he's not experience........
I'm a wall of "Just Say No."
I won't be bullied by Obamamaniacs.
She is unethical. That's a given. The Clinton White House was incredibly unethical.
Nobody has a problem with her talking about issues or his experience. They have a problem with her promoting the Republican, which, as a general campaign strategy, is a suicide pact for the party. And it just shows once again that the Clintons only care about themselves and they have a horrible impact on the rest of the party.
agreed!!!
she should have pulled an obama and respond in a SPEECH about how hard it is to be a WOMAN in this country. She could have started with the history of woman, from annie oakley to Arianna and including Rosa Parks story , and bring it all the way up to today where Woman have to pad their resume in order to get the job over the less qualified men.
Oh and maybe throw her grandfather under the bus
A speech by Hillary Clinton about women in America. That would be some tall order after Obama's speech, and I wouldn't envy her the task. If she wanted to take it on, and managed somehow to pull it off, I think that would be very impressive, even with all that's gone before. I think it's much too late, though. I've tried to keep the door open, I really have, but I've got to admit my heart is hardened to her now, and she'd have to do an awful lot for that to ever change.
So, let me understand your essential arguments:
1) Being a woman in this country is equally as hard as being an African-American. Therefore, since Sen. Obama's speech outlined the African-American struggle in his speech, Sen. Clinton should make a similar speech with regard to the struggles of women.
2) The only way for a woman to succeed over less qualified men is to lie on her resume.
Now, as to your first argument, did you actually read Sen. Obama's speech in its entirety (read it, not listen to pieces of it on the evening news or filtered through pundits)? If not, I urge you to do so. It may not change your position towards him, but perhaps it may just enlighten you a bit. And if you did read the speech all the way through before you wrote this post, then I would humbly suggest that you read it again.
And as for your second argument, I have personally known many talented women who have done quite well in their careers--surpassing many men--all without lying or embellishing their resumes. So it seems to me that this argument is particularly insulting to those women, indeed to all successful women, because it denigrates their accomplishments. Are you suggesting that people like Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein and Meg Whitman all got ahead because they lied?
Seriously...your #2.... is just that....#2. Hillary didn't lie about her resume...just because the "I love Obama" media is playing her exiting off the plane ad nauseam on the news doesn't negate the fact that she did something while she was there. We're seeing her walk off the plane...a plane that did land in a war zone and there were reports of a sniper in that area. Her recall of that sniper WAS exaggerated...point taken, jokes taken, LOADS of loop vids taken...but what's sad, to say the least, is that the fact that she did accomplish something there hasn't even been mentioned. This makes me question experience too ....not Hillary's, but Obama's. Does Sen. Obama think foreign diplomacy means plane exiting? Does CNN think this as well? Embarrassing embellishment by Hillary? YES....but does it negate the event? NO The event still happened and still is on her resume. But apparently it's more fun to act like idiots and call her Tonya Harding and now Snippergate. Meanwhile...Sen. Clinton still has this event as experience and Sen. Obama doesn't. Geez what will everyone do for fun if Hillary loses the nod?
Consider...? To a dispassionate mind it must occur that Clinton and McCain have a single puppet master. To such a puppet master, it does not matter which wins. To such a puppet master, if either wins, the military industrial complex is assured of continuing its cancerous, parasitic hold on the American people. Obama is a wild card. There is a possibility he can not be controlled. Bless him and keep him safe.
Very perceptive and wiser words were never spoken! Keep him safe!
Indeed - the only explanation for Hillary's behavior is that she is in fact a REPUBLICAN shill. Just look at the evidence: Her and Bill brought us NAFTA. They ignored climate change, even with Al Gore as Bill's VP, and Bill, like every Republican President in recent memory is a well know liar. Hillary is also, by now, a well known liar, cheered for NAFTA and insists on staying in the race to the benefit of John McCain. She can't win, but if she can't hijack the Presidency for the Republican puppetmasters, she'll do what she can to destroy the Democratic party and it's nominee for them. You want to talk about Judas, Hillary; let's talk about Judas....
Hilary says:
"After all we have heard and seen he would not be my pastor"
My response:
"After all we have heard and seen he would not be my husband"
There is a lot of complexity, ambiguity and nuance in the manner in which we approach the relationships of those most close to us, as Senator Clinton herself clearly knows. Bill Clinton publicly humiliated her, his office and his party. But she and the democratic party did not throw him over the side. We, and she I would surmise, found some value in sticking with him. I think Senator Clinton would do us all a service if she was honest with herself about the bold and honest discussion of race that Obama opened up and did not stoke the racial resentments in this country. She may have been asked the question, but she has been asked it for over a week and no doubt hoped Obama would self-destruct without her input. When faced with the issue passing by and her fabrications on Tuzla - she went there.
Hilary says:
"After all we have heard and seen he would not be my pastor"
Why, given her recent track record, would anyone choose to believe that ?
When caught out, she says she "misspoke" ( a nice Bushism !) or "mistated". One of Thatchers sidekicks in the UK (Brenard Ingham) talked of "being economical with the truth"
What all these comments have in common is the attempt of someone in a prominent position to try and reduce the effect of being caught out in barefaced lies. Lets call it what it really is - euphemisms don't cut much ice !!
She thinks that only she can choose to stay in a relationship. Train up a child in the way he/she should go, and when he is old he/she will not depart. No matter how you paint the picture, Hil will not leave Bil, she apparently, feels the power in being with him, if at least no near him. Why? We don't know, but she surely appears happier away from him, and when she is surrounded by a few other folks. I think Hil needs to take a long vacation in a rehab or something and get herself healed or at least rested. She is appearing tired and wrinkled. She appears to have had a massage, botox, detox treatment at her debates. She thinks she is rather pretty and grandstands a lot durng this time. What's up with that? She still hasn't taken the time to get the docs submitted... Why? doesn't she have a DL? Whew!
KEY, IMO - Even if she was only answering a Q from the editors of the newspaper, when she made her comments about Wright, her true nature was revealed because she then went to the press conf. and repeated herself about it.
I never thought I would despise her and Bill, but the above pluse his comment about how nice things would be if the 2 white candidates squared off in the general w/o the "stuff" it all makes me sick.
hillary has nothing but lies to tell about herself, so she spends her time and the toe suckers money trashing Obama in the hopes that she can run again in 2008 before her botox wears off.
What a horrid woman.
Let the hillary vetting begin! It has been lots of fun and bullshit so far
I wasn't in church, before I was in church.
Hillary is the new Nader. Whoever gets the nomination can blame her for McCain's victory.
Do the Library donors prefer McCain? Or did she make the sniper statement over the phone
@ 3-AM?
I think Clintonites should be honest about your "outrage" over Obama's minister. It's not about what he said or your "deep" concern for Obama's children, who I am sure will grow into proud and successful women. The fact is you don't want to vote for a black man and this gives you the "legitimate" in your minds, reason not to. Everyone has friends, family or even perhaps our own thoughts that if voiced could be labeled, sinful, unAmerican, or simply radical or racists. They come at at times of passion or anger, but we don't disavow or disown because of them. We realize what they are, where they come from and the social or personal reasons why they fester in us or those around us. We move on and as any "good" Christian or moral person would we forgive for some understanding. If we honestly question, we look further, into the why and wheres and details. Have you listened to Wrights sermon? Have listened to "The Audacity of Hope" the sermon that DID influence Obama. Have you based your views on the whole picture or sound bites. Few have, it's easier to use it as an excuse a smoke screen, a way to ignore your own prejudices and hold to something outside yourself to use as a measure for your judgments.
At least be honest with yourselves if you can't be honest in your words here. It's not his policies you dislike, it's not his ideas, it's his color.
i dont see color
I understand that it is an insult to blacks when you say you don't see color, instead of saying I see your color but I don't associate the bad and negative things usually asociated with it. Blacks don't appreciate being rendered invisible to accomodate someone's unconscious racism.
Makes sense to me...
Playing the race card again. I know true black leaders and they are not cons like Obama. I am white but I did form the Cathoic Interracial council at my University in 1965, I served with and was commanded by black officers in Viet Nam. I do not like cons be they black white red or yellow. You should be ashamed of yourself. Obama has philosophical baggage. It is living the American dream while putting a spin on hate speech by his minister of 20 years, his friendship with a domestic terrorist, his spiritual advisors like Rv. Sharpton or Rev Meeks, or talking at a 1999 Palestinian money rally. I take insult that you would accuse us who have questions about Obama as being motivated by racism. I have taken life and death orders from black leaders, have you??
You have no basis to make the false acusations that you have.
get to know rev.manning, sounds like your kind of guy. hill the schrill is a pathological liar.
"or talking at a 1999 Palestinian money rally"
Your not racist? What is wrong with talking at a Palestinian rally?
Why should Obama play the race card? He was trying to avoid it. It is Hillary and Bill who are playing the race card and having surrogates play it in any way they can. It was Hillary today, no yesterday, who was trying to keep the Wright topic alive saying she wouldn't have him as her pastor. Who asked her to judge his sermons? Many of us have looked into Wright's other sermons, his overall character and the people who are speaking up to praise him--including Hillary's former pastor and we are quite impressed.
Pastor Of Clinton's Former Church: Don't Use Wright To Polarize -
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/25/pastor-of-clintons-forme_n_93418.html
I agree with you 100%.people are trying to hide their own biases. How many of us do not share these same thoughts in our minds and hearts.HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN LET HIM CAST THE FIRST STONE.
Hillary Clinton would've left the church she claims.Well, she did not leave Bill when: HE INVITED THE SAME REV. WRIGHT TO PRAY WITH HIM AT THE WHITE HOUSE.
She did not leave Bill when:he burnrd the American Flag at Red Square in protest of the war.WAS that a Patriotic Act or What? She did not leave Bill when:he was impeached, when he brought women into the white house. The LIST GOES ON AND ON. TALK ABOUT DOUBLE TALK.Hypocrisy.Isn't this the same SNIPER LADY who all of a sudden got her Facts all mixed up?GIVE ME A BREAK!
Oh, please.
How many of us have let people into our homes without knowing their political, social and racial views? Many. As Hillary noted, you cannot choose your family, but you can choose your pastor. Your husband may not be a blood relative, but the children you have with him certainly are. Based on the way Chelsea has conducted herself since she became an adult (especially the way she dealt with a question related to the Lewinsky matter), I'd say Bill and Hillary have done a good job raising their daughter despite their marital problems.
How many of us have committed an illegal act by burning the American Flag? None. Burning the American flag is not illegal. It is our right as American citizens.
How many of us committed unpatriotic acts to protest the/a war? Many. Just ask protestors of the Vietnam, Gulf or Iraq wars.
How many of us have remained with our spouse after their repeated acts of infidelity despite what our friends and family advised us? Many.
How many people have trouble recalling exact details of events from 1993? Many. If fact, Barack Obama had trouble last week when he gave different answers several times when asked when or if he had ever heard his pastor of twenty years make unpatriotic comments or give his views on race. How many 20year members of Trinity Church never realized Pastor Wright's beliefs about our country and race? Many......???? Now you give me a break, ceesaw!
what is all this nonsense about "we don't disown them" ! Why wouldn't we disown hateful people?
There are certainly enough "good, decent, loving people in this world", to be your mentor.
What I would really like to know is if Mr. Obama had his 2 beautiful daughters by his side, when Pastor Wright was giving his sermons.
I'm sick of all the Obamarama's thinking with their racist one sided views.
Wright is Wrong and Obama is a Fake.
Has anyone asked him about his premarital affairs? Or is he a lilly white black man?>
Between the cocaine and marijuana use, I'm pretty sure there is a white woman out there whose about to come out of the closet.
The only "hateful" people I see are those who got suckered by Fox news, and a 30 second clip, and who now ironically spend all their time on blogs mindlessly repeating the racist hatred that Fox news incited in them with a phoney smear job.
Wright isnt "hateful". All the grown ups already looked at the clips IN context and decided it was a hachet job. Go inform yourself before you spread shit about others.
OHMYGOD!!! You mean there are people that (gasp) have had sex before marriage? There are 40-somethings that used cocaine and marijuana when they were younger? Quick, get my smelling salts....I feel a bit faint... Next thing you know, people are gonna be saying that pro wrestling isn't real!

Another great post about Rev Wright from CNN. Read it, and share it.
