Cory Monteith: A Fan's Reaction

I've witnessed the passing of many celebrities and icons over the years. This is the first time that it has ever felt personal to me.

Sometimes, the best way to get your feelings out is to write them down.

"Glee" is one of my favorite TV shows, and has been since the pilot aired in 2009. One of the reasons that I loved the pilot episode so much was the tall, goofy football player with a heart of gold, Finn Hudson. In a way, Finn was solely responsible for the glee club that we've come to know and love. He's the one who brought them together with "Don't Stop Believin'," and we've loved him ever since.

Why is Finn so lovable? Because of that tall, goofy actor with a heart of gold, Cory Monteith.

Everyone who knew or met Cory had nothing but nice things to say about him. He was known as one of the friendliest guys in the cast. Multiple newbies said that Cory was the person who reached out to them and really made them feel comfortable on set.

Earlier this year, Cory went to rehab. Friends and fans alike publicly displayed their support and love for him. Basically, they reflected Cory's own loving energy back at him, because when someone is so kind they inspire kindness in return. It's no secret that Cory has struggled with drugs since he was 13 years old. He has always been very open about it. Addiction is a terrible illness that has the power to take the best person from the people that love them. While we do not yet know the cause of death, with Cory it could have done just that.

I've witnessed the passing of many celebrities and icons over the years. This is the first time that it has ever felt personal to me. Before I had mourned with the crowd and tweeted my respects, but this morning when I woke up to three text messages telling me the news, I was shocked and deeply, truly sad. I imagine a lot of people are sharing in this experience. Cory is the first loss that this young generation of fans has experienced. It has moved and inspired me to see the fans come together in such a huge way.

In times like this, I've heard people use this quote:

"Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another."
― Albert Einstein

It's up to us to take Cory's kind, loving and goofy energy with us and carry it in our lives. His memory, impact, inspiration and energy will live on.

My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones. We love you, Cory.
