Team Earth: Are You In?

Posted: 09/21/09 11:54 AM ET

Saving the planet won't be easy -- and it's certainly not something you can do alone. That's why I need your help -- and that's why I've joined teamearth.com.

We all know that our planet is at a critical juncture: and humanity needs a healthy planet to survive.

The facts could not be more clear: The burning and clearing of tropical forests puts more carbon into the atmosphere than the entire world's cars, trucks, planes, trains, and ships combined. When our forests disappear, temperatures rise. Luckily, there is an immediate solution that requires only political will: save the forests that provide so many benefits for us all.

That's why Team Earth is issuing an urgent, immediate challenge by teaming up with the Prince's Rainforest Project to call for swift action and funding to reduce tropical deforestation -- and create incentives for a new approach to environmentally friendly economic development.

To succeed, we will need the support of the governments and communities of rainforest nations, meaningful involvement from private investors and the governments of major developed countries -- and the citizens who can force them to act.

That's where you come in.

By signing up you can join the chorus calling for urgent action to fight climate change by addressing rainforest destruction -- and help assure that we can gain the support of the many partners needed to win this fight.

It's that easy. Just join Team Earth and we'll help you do your part.

We've done great things before, and now is the time for us to do them once more.

Are you in?

Harrison: your dreams are nice but
Into team earth include S.C. Johnson and your CEO Fisk Johnson?
Fisk Johnson, to look like a champion environmentalist especially "credible"
must first resolve a serious problem in South America
caused by a plant (Podesta) Company
S.C. Johnson & Son de Argentina. (Argentina: Developing Nation)

There on the Net to find one place where
documentary information on the environmental impacts
caused by the industrial plant S.C. Johnson & Son
The site is http://terratox.org/

Specifically on groundwater contamination by hydrocarbons
http://terratox.org/HistNapas/HistNapas.htm

About twice the environmental impact resulting company will find:

Pollutants released during his Major Industrial Accidents.
http://terratox.org/SituaToxic/contamaccid.htm
By pollutants released by industrial activity daily.
http://terratox.org/SituaToxic/contamfuncion.htm

More info at: http://terratoxnews.wordpress.com/

Mr. Fisk:
First we need to preserve life and environmental health of human beings
who are targets of environmental impacts around the plant
located in industrial Pablo Podesta, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Only after the saplings and fame.

Mr. Ford: REITERATES: your dreams are nice

Deforestation is directly proportional to population growth, and unless that is reined in, no number of inspiring tree-saving programs will stop deforestation. Talking about limiting population growth is still pretty much taboo and evokes visions of totalitarianism, but it's the only realistic path to saving the forests.

Well said! Agree with you 100% and was going to make the same comment until I saw yours.
I have refused to donate to or participate in any "environmental" group, fund, or movement that does not have family planning right out front as part of its plan to tackle the future sustainability of the balance of Earth's resources.

I'll try this again since HP found my agreement offensive enough to censor the first time.

I agree 100% and will not donate to or participate in any "environmental" fund, movement, or organization that doesn't now address exponentially growing populati0n right up front.

Well said!

Hey I am all for stopping the destruction of the rain forests. They ARE the lungs of our planet. And corporations are going to have to be dragged kicking and screaming to change their ways. I hate to be cynical, but when I see all of Team Earth's "corporate sponsors", alarm bells go off. It's like those annoying Exxon commercials on tv PRETENDING to be about green technology. Exxon doesn't give a damn about saving the planet, only their bottom line. It's simply a PR stunt. Green is in, so they jump on the bandwagon to get good face time. So when I went to the team earth website and saw all those corporation names, I couldn't help feel the same cold cynical feelings run down my spine. These companies care more about the publicity and being associated with the green movement, then they are about saving the planet. I am convinced of this. Just as surely as I am convinced that Health Insurance companies care more about denying people coverage than covering them. I am sorry, but when MONEY is involved....all motives must be questioned. Healing the sick, wether it is a person or the planet should not be about money. Business cares only about one thing...their profits. Hit them in their profits, and THEN they'll care. Force them to change, don't ask them to. Until we do this, anything corporations say or do should be questioned.

When leaf miners infest a citrus tree they destroy every leaf they can before moving to the fruit and even the soft branches, however they stop just short of destroying the tree - after all it is their host. However, after the 2nd or third harvest of fruit they will destroy it, their numbers just overwhelm the host - and they move on to a new tree. If there is a new tree.

Mr. Ford,

I applaud you, sir, in your desire to take a second look at the environment. However, I do feel that in many ways, you come late to the party. i do understand the desire to engage corporate entities into this dialogue, but after awhile the charm wears off and one realizes they come with too many restrictions.

But I have come to the more impolite moment here, and I do question your motives:

Did your manager put you up to this? Is this actually coming from what would call a "soul" (I do know how difficult it is in the entertainment industry to hold onto that, just look at any of the nasty comments to Ms. Spears, etc. It is hard to hold onto these days.)

I am a fan, but, imho, that last one sucked rocks. And I am not looking forward to the fifth one. If this is in any way to polish an image for the next possible stinker, you can count me out.

But, like Pascal hedging bets, again I applaud your desire to address these issues. Please check out Earth Day 2.0. Remember, the last one was about a year ago. I don't remember you there.

Sorry, the government just gave a half billion of our money to Gores new car company. Maybe you can just skim off some of that money. Both are a waste and Gore announced several years ago that the earth will be done in just a few more years anyway. Its too late I guess. The temperatures have cooled recently, once again provingnthat we have cycles. Just like the ice age was a joke in the 60's, this will prove to be the largest hoax ever perpetrated on the world. Think of all the poor people we could have helped with all the money wasted on global warming schemes.

Mr. Ford, I love your movies. I believe your intentions are kind and that you want to help the earth.
But please sir, don't let Team Earth be used by companies like Pepsico.
Let's think about this. Does soda make people healthy? Products like soda that uses High Fructose Corn Syrup, are known contributors to diabetes and a vast array of health problems.
I think Team Earth means that it's concerned about planet and people, correct?
So how can a company that produces unhealthy products like Pepsico be a sponsor of Team Earth?
07:24 PM on 09/22/2009
Corporate sponsors like Johnson and Johnson, Pepsico, Starbucks, etc don't represent the Green/Sustainable movement. The website clearly shows corporate interests as opposed to peoples' interests. What's up with all the corporate logos on the homepage? Where are the faces of the people?
Yes, it could be a good forum for people to share ideas. But the site looks very corporate centric.

Also, why should fortune 100 companies that pollute the world and our bodies be sponsors? There are hundreds....thousands of eco/human friendly companies that could be sponsors of Team Earth, such as Seventh Generation, Patagonia, Aubrey Organics, Dr. Bronners, Eden Foods, etc. These companies and many others provide quality wholesome products that are good for our bodies and for the environment.

I can almost expect Chevron to be a sponsor of Team Earthr, if they paid enough money. Wouldn't that be incredible, since they polluted the amazon rainforest for the past 3 decades.

As someone pointed out, cutting back on eating meat (all kinds, not just beef) would do more to save the rain forests and halt global warming than almost any other action you could take. See the movie, "Meat: The Truth" for more information about this.

Not only is eating less meat good for the planet, it is better for you as well.

Maybe we should worry about the 14 million children that will starve this year first, then the cows and forests after...
01:58 PM on 09/27/2009
John88 - the 14 million starving children are a result of all governments but China to deal with overpopulation. Remember the big famine in Ethiopia where a rock band mounted a huge campaign to get food to the starving Ethiopians. Well to-day there is another famine in Ethiopia but there are now twice as many Ethiopians as there were when the pop stars rallied to raise money to feed the starving Ethiopians. Children needn't starve. Governments have to sanction and demand birth control. A one child policy will not stop population growth for decades but it is better than having the number of children who starve increase exponentially. And without forests there will be even more children who starve. I am sure you can do without a big mac. MacDonalds gets a lot of beef from land that was once rain forest.

Maybe if we Americans all scaled back our use of global resources, 14 million children wouldn't have to starve to death every year.

Why does this feel like treating Snowden's wounds?

And why the big corporate sponsors? Feels like greenwashing to me.

Americans use 3x the amount of energy that our European counterparts do. Guess what? If we scaled our lifestyles back to match that of Europeans, WE WOULD NOT NEED TO IMPORT ANY OIL. The US could be energy independent. We wouldn't need to invade foreign countries to steal their oil. And we would not be responsible for the global ecological damage that we are causing, not just in the rainforests, but in ecosystems around the world.

How could you make a start on cutting back your energy use?
-Buy local seasonal produce. Don't buy produce from South America (how about that for making an impact on the rain forests?). If it's not fresh and local, don't eat it. Quit buying and eating seafood unless it is locally caught. Yes, this means DOING WITHOUT sometimes. Don't be a greedy pig.

-Move closer to work. Agitate for decent mass transit where you live, and organize people to demand it.

-Quit buying cheap junk made in foreign countries by what is essentially slave labor. (Did it ever occur to you that Americans still have slaves - they're just in foreign countries.) Realize that buying more stuff is not in YOUR interests, or the planet's interests. It's in the interests of advertisers who make you think you want or need that junk. Just say "no"

-Make do with less. Reduce, re-use, recycle.

With population continuing to grow out of control, we will have little choice but to continue deforestation in order to have enough land to grow enough food for everyone.

We can (A) cut our meat consumption, (B) cut this "biofuels" waste of crops, (C) make better use of existing deforested lands, much of which is publicly-owned, and (D) promote population control.
07:25 AM on 09/22/2009
By 2050 it is predicted that we will have between 9 and 11 billion people. We have many starving people now at 6.5 billion. If we cut meat, then we will need more crops so the issue doesn't really change. Biofuels are a waste for sure.
