Of course, it's debatable whether Tammy Faye Messner (or Bakker, as the NYT insists on calling her in its obit) is in fact a newsworthy character. Her only claim to fame/notoriety was to have been the marital partner of a convicted crooked televangelist. But the producers of Larry King Live had long ago made their decision: her remarriage, her illness, everything about her, they seemed to think, was newsworthy. So it's peculiar squared when TVNewser reports that Larry King not only got an exclusive on news of his recent guest's death (she appears to have expired mere hours after her last appearance on his show), but agreed to withhold the information at the family's request for more than a day. What TVNewswer doesn't tell us is how this behavior comports with CNN policy. For what other newsworthy pals would King extend this remarkable courtesy? And would other CNN anchors be allowed to exercise similar latitude in reporting what they knew?
