Maybe Mitt Romney Should Run for Governor of Louisiana

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

One person dead, an escalating problem with ceiling bolts in tunnels at the Big Dig, and Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has introduced emergency legislation to take inspection of the highway and tunnel system away from the Turnpike Authority. His money quote:

"When it comes to an issue of inspecting the tunnel system, to have the person who's been responsible for it for the last several years say, 'I'm going to inspect it' and tell us, 'It's now safe,' that's not enough," the governor said. "The public wants to see an independent inspection effort."

He added: "There should no longer be any doubt that the Turnpike Authority has failed to do its job effectively."

And it's not just Mitt:

12 members of the Massachusetts congressional delegation signed a letter asking the National Transportation Safety Board to lead the investigation. They said it is one of the few agencies without any apparent involvement in the project that would pose a conflict of interest.

By that standard, the last people to be issuing a report on the failed levee and floodwall system in New Orleans, and certifying it as safe after repairs, is the US Army Corps of Engineers. Yet no one in Louisiana, or Washington, D.C., has, in the eleven months since more than a thousand were killed in the disaster, issued a Romney-like statement.

Anybody else wonder why?
