Fields of Heaven: A Joint Israeli-Palestinian Farm May Take Root in West Bank

Posted: 08/22/2012 3:45 pm

For the last year or so, I've been spending time with unlikely friends: a loose group of West Bank Palestinians and Jewish settlers, most of them neighbors, living within a few miles of each other. The mainstreams of these two populations seem like they are in almost constant conflict -- last week, settlers are suspected of throwing into a Palestinian taxi a fire bomb that wounded six people, including two children. Meanwhile, members of this small group of friends have met, responding to such acts of violence, and also planning longer term projects.

It seems like a dilemma has been created during the last three years of Netanyahu's right wing administration: the settler population has been steadily increasing, and no progress has been made in the less and less likely "two-state solution." And so the West Bank has become, more and more, a seemingly permanent patchwork of Israeli settlements and nearby Palestinian towns and villages. The neighbors share many of the same roads, but almost never meet face-to-face.

Nahum was born in Hebron, in the West Bank, and so has lived his whole life in the West Bank. His great-grandfather, a rabbi whose name Nahum shares, was killed by the Nazis in the Ukraine. But Nahum tells me that, over the years, he decided to "stop taking the victim's position." Later in the conversation, he smiles mischievously and jokes, "You know, the Palestinians are victims -- but we are more victims!"

Ziad was in prison for five years during the first Intifada (1987-1993). He hasn't been clear with me about why he was imprisoned, but since he was a teenager then, I assume it was for rock throwing. Ziad told me he realized there, "I don't want my kids to have to learn the same way I did -- in prison -- that peace is the right way."

Ziad and Nahum originally met at events organized by Rabbi Menachem Froman, the "settler rabbi for peace." Froman has been perfecting his rebel rabbi wisdom for many years.

Froman was one of the founders of Gush Emunim, the Israeli political movement, started in the 1970s, that encouraged founding settlements in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights. He is now the chief rabbi of the settlement of Tekoa. But Froman was also friends for many years with Yassir Arafat, and also met in Gaza with Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, the spiritual founder of Hamas (who was killed by the Israeli military in 2007). When I asked Froman what he would do if his settlement became part of a future Palestinian state, his response was, "I am a citizen of the state of God ... It's not so important who is the government."

This spring, Nahum, Ziad and Shaul, another settler, came up with a concrete idea to manifest their lofty ideals: they decided to start a small organic farm business together. While many Jews and Muslims here believe their religions have exclusively bequeathed them the land, these guys assert a higher wisdom, "The land doesn't belong to us, we belong to the land." They're calling the project Fields of Heaven.

The guys went on a first visit together to the wadi (valley) next to Ziad's town, where they plan to start the farm. It was an amazing spring day, and the perennial springs were full.

Becoming more public with their ideas, the farm will be a test of their commitment, and probably also their courage. Especially among Palestinians, an "anti-normalization" movement has arisen recently, which believes generally that until the Palestinians have more rights, or a state of their own, fraternizing with Israelis, and especially settlers, is frowned upon. There have even been rumors (causing fear among several Palestinians I've talked to) that Palestinian Authority officials have scoured YouTube, looking for videos that show local Palestinians and settlers together.

Still, Nahum, Ziad, Shaul and their friends believe that the best way to change preconceptions about "the other" is face-to-face meetings. They want Fields of Heaven to be a place that will attract people from all sides, to do precisely that. To spend an hour, volunteering at the farm together, or taking a workshop there, that will give them precisely what is missing for most settlers and Palestinians: a place where they can meet, even for an hour, as equals.

it can be done .. the true path to peace takes courage on all fronts... this is a example for those who doubt that these groups cant get along ,,,, the billions we send should only fund these projects..not others.

"The land doesn't belong to us, we belong to the land."

I love this idea. I wish them great success in their enterprise, as well as in their quest for peace, which will be good for us all. Finding a way through established metal models, repeated impasses, and occasional escalation isn't easy and I credit them for their vision, drive, and ability to find a new solution.

Salaam. Shalom.

I find it illuminating that all the negative comments about this this peaceful project, whose purpose to bring Palestinians and Israelis together, are coming from the so called Palestinian supporters. It's clear naysayers real goal is.

They are on Palestinian land. All of this is a sham. Rabbi Froman is not a settler for peace.

Hi Cynthia - well, I guess this is one of the issues that their project makes people think about. So, you feel the two state solution is the only solution, I guess? West Bank is Palestine? Then can there be a minority of Jews in Palestine, just like there are about 1.5 million Palestinians who are Israeli citizens? Or do you want all the Jews living in the West Bank to evacuate? Is that fair, a little too simple? Do you believe there can be a state of Israel, or is that a problem too? What is peace then?

I think she was just highlighting the point that this joint project of equality between 'Israeli' settlers & Palestinian Arabs just so happens to be on Palestinian territory, meanwhile Palestinians are being refused the right to return to their native land that they were exiled from just decades ago, after having inhabited the land for a millennia.
They are being denied ROR full stop, let alone returning with equal rights as 'Israelis'.
So looking at the bigger picture, this is not equality at all, its equality between 'Israeli' settlers & Palestinian Arabs.....in the West Bank.

...a place to meet as equals. This gives me a ray of hope. I must say only a ray, but it is hope. I've been to Israel many times, mostly the West Bank. The 2 state solution maybe the begining, but just like the north and south in the USA, we have learned to live each other. Black/white..we are still learning. I would love to believe there is enough of Israel in Israel for everyone. BUT...they live as divided people. How will anyone break down those walls. I read the book.."The Lemon Tree" and it changed me profoundly. Just to meet as equals, let our kids play with each....

There was once a time when Scotland & England were in a conflict just as tense as the current 'Israel' - Arab one today. It might have been inconceivable that there could ever be peace between them back in those days. Generally speaking, all that remains between Scots & the English today.....is light-hearted humour.

Planting the trees ----- and reading this story reminds that several years ago there were a lot of trees planted by the Saudi Government too in the desert area of Mina and Arafat, these trees have grown and there have been prophecies that would happen. Nothing develops without a reason. So now the ideas of trees on the LAND OF GOD where the people belong to and not the land belong to them, there are prophecies too of big trees and the one shown in the picture with its trunk seems to grow more to fullfill those prophecies related to the Jesus Second Coming, well things happen for a reason not coincidently, there are tidings and tribulations, and we all will work one day togather under God ------------------------ whether you believe it or not. that is all folks.

Number of Israelis killed by Palestinians since 1987, home made rockets, suicide bombers and all: 7,968, with 1,620 of them being children.

Number of Palestinians killed by Israelis since 1987, American made rockets and all: 1,503, with 142 of them being children.

Israelis have killed more Palestinian children than Palestinians have killed Israeli adults. Why isn't that taught in history class?

And since 1948 the total number is around 11,000 Palestinians (most of them militants) and 3,700 Israelis (around 600 children).
Why should it be taught in history class ? there are way worse conflicts going on in the world, especially in the Middle East. Just in the Iran-Iraq war over 2 million people died (7 years).

maybe it is time for the Palestinians to make peace then? You act like those deaths happen in some sort of bubble. Palestinians have been attacking Israelis, when that happens, the more powerful force usually kills more ppl. Especially when Palestinians don't protect their civilian population like Israel does. Unfortunately a dead Palestinian child is a great propaganda tool for them, where a dead Israeli child only shows the failure of the Israelis in protecting them.

Look at other insurgencies throughout history, use your statistics and compare them to those killed in the Israel/Arab conflict, to make any other comparisons is both stupid and careless.

Unfortunately, when a Palestinian father pulls the shrapnel from his dead child's body, it has USA written all over it (figuratively of course). Your head is somewhere where the sun don't shine if you believe that father is in any way going to be anything but hostile toward the US.

asking the question why do you feel that the Palestinians wouldnt make peace if the offers were fair..no water rights,,, dependency on others mineral rights taken...no viable economy.. ..that is what .. and your morbid and racist views are a huge reason if you truely represent the prevasive feelings of the right,.... however, i know first hand of the peace camps in Israel that doesnt share your views.. and that is why stories like this existince..by the way if you want the truth look at BtSelems facts,. then get back to us..

It is good to hear the report of these farmers working together. I'm glad it is out in the open and I hope it will get more press because then it would be harder for one side to stop it. I am aware that there have been other things like this going on for some time in Israel. For those of you who do not know about it check out the Oasis of Peace at the following website. (nswas.org) This is a situation where Jewish and Palestinian Arab people are living together in the same community. For a number of years the Presbyterian Church I pastor has sent their peacemaking dollars to this group. I firmly believe it is these kinds of groups that will eventually bring peace to that region.

Sounds like a wonderful project. Neither group of people is going anywhere, so they need to learn to live with each other.
