Fifty Shades of Blues - A Reader's Withdrawal

Posted: 05/22/2012 1:26 pm

I've been thinking about starting a support group. I'm experiencing Fifty Shades withdrawal and I'm not alone. I got a bit of advanced warning when my girlfriend Dawn started to severely suffer from FSS - Fifty Shades Syndrome. I was just discovering book one when she completed book three and had a minor Christian Grey meltdown. I almost mocked her for the over dramatization of her attachment to her fictional friends. That is until I started to understand her adhesive obsession. My wild ride through the pages of E.L. James' trilogy was a mix between voracious page-turning consumption of every single word, and deliberately slowing down the inevitable trek to the end because I could see that I was on my way to the same place. The delicate balance between those two sensations almost drove me mad, akin to one of Christian's pleasure paining punishments, like when he wouldn't allow Anastasia to reach full passion. It's a very Grey-esque torture to not want to finish the books so the ride isn't over but needing to finish the books because you must know what happens.

So now they are gone. And I miss them. They were a part of my days and nights over the past several weeks and I'm trying to figure out what to do with the remnants of their allure that's still resonates with me. I've already cast the movie in my head, pinned my favorite quotes from the books on Pinterest, created a Fifty Shades playlist with Britney Spears and Chopin, and upgraded my Wal-Mart wardrobe without the help of a Neiman's personal shopper. Now what?

I've even been thinking about getting an Audi. The books, an implicit commercial for the German automotive company, made them sound like so much fun to drive. I'm not interested in the submissive special and the R8 is way out of my price range. However, the Q5 could be a viable option. I saw someone driving the R8 on my way to work the other day and I wondered if it was a gift from a billionaire lover. That's when I realized the Grey blues had come over me. I had to phone a friend so we could commiserate in common. Thank goodness I was not alone and had someone to talk to about my condition!

Now, I don't want you to worry too much for me. I went through something quite similar but not nearly as severe with Katniss and Peeta after reading Suzanne Collins' trilogy. I subsequently submersed myself in all things Hunger Games. But I will admit having the movie in theaters so close to the time I finished the last book helped bring closure; that along with something new to read to give my imagination a cleansing workout.

The real problem is I'm not ready to move on from my Fifty. Yes, MY Fifty. Ok, OUR Fifty. I know a lot of people are managing their withdrawal by re-reading their favorite book in the series or reading all three again. I haven't decided if that will be my next move or not. So in the interim I will continue to lean on those of you who are also experiencing FSS. Together, I know we can get through this. Laters.

Anyone else consider finding Virgin Again pills?

I read all three books in less than a week and I am having such bad withdrawal symptoms that I read the first one again. I am completed addicted to them...I so so hope that E L James brings out another book...or how about another trilogy just from Christian's point of view??? I think I could somehow manage that!

I have just finished the last book and I feel so lost I have another book to read from a different author but can't bring myself to pick it up, I am going to read through some of my faviroute bits from each book hopefully that will help hope the movie hurries up and comes out soon.

After reading the books and wanting more I purchased the AudioBooks and they are great. A different feel and very entertaining!

That's a great idea Kandice. I would have never thought of that!

*Lets out hugh sigh* I loved your article and I'm so happy to hear that I'm not the only one going through withdrawal lol. Seriously It's been almost a week since I finished the series and I still can't get Christian out of my head.... perhaps I should try and find Dr. Flynn.

Well at least I didn't think about buying and Audi. I did however consider becoming a brunette and relocating to Seattle. (Obsessed much)

We should start a support group or maybe a "we want more christian" club. Oh what I wouldn't give for one night at escala! I so hope E.L. James adds more stories from Christian's perspective.

I like the "We want more Christian" idea! Thank you.

Yes Helen, please start a support group. I read all three books in a week. Up until 4am every morning, yikes! Now withdrawls are setting in and it's painful. I would be in your support group, lol!

I love your article and can relate to it completely. Thank you so much for writing it. Fifty obsessed. Laters.

Ditto. Agree with your withdrawal post. I feel almost silly about it, but it's definitely a sadness or "something" similar. It's not *just* their many intimate moments that I miss (those scenes become part of the story, part of WHO THEY ARE, part of helping him heal. I miss it all. She could truly do the entire series from his perspective and sell just as many books. I am sure of it.

Helen, I have never related to an article more than I have yours! HAHAHA. Especially in considering buying an Audi! OMG.

I would love for Chris Pine or Henry Cavill to play Christian and would love to see Amanda Seyfried play Ana. Would love for Emma Stone to play Kate and Paul Walker to play Elliot (especially if Chris Pine played Christian). I think Kim Catrell would be a perfect Elena!!! Mia should be played by Mila Kunis. Thoughts ladies?? :-)

Wow, that's a great cast. I would have flipped Amanda and Emma though.

The cure for FSS is discovering new books! Gabriel's Inferno, and the newly released sequel, Gabriel's Rapture, were written by EL James' writing friend, Sylvain Reynard, and they are the NEXT BIG THING in romance. These books will enthrall you...

Thanks for the tips. I'll look for those.
09:37 AM on 05/25/2012
Right there with you Helen! I've been re-reading select parts from the books but it's not enough. how about Henry Cavill or Dan Stevens as Christian?

I am almost done with the Trilogy, and although I don't share your passion for it, I DO whole-heartedly support it!

I was/am this way about the Twilight series and have reveled in it with my like-minded co-horts and been hurts by the "slings and arrows" of people who just don’t get it.

Since you are just beginning your FIFTY journey of withdrawal (you will only get final closure with that last Fifty Shades Freed movie, I assume), remember to enjoy every moment and not let anyone steal your joy. These books have brought you happiness, and that can be a rare find some days. If ever anyone makes you feel bad for having this joy, brush it off and feel sorry for that person. Sorry for them because if they could capture a little bit of the joy, then maybe they wouldn’t try and squelch yours.

HAVE FUN WITH IT!

To all my fellow FSS sufferers, I know the perfect cure for this condition.

I suggest we all petition or strongly encourage E.L James to write a fourth book from Christan Grey's POV. How tantalizing was the read at the end of 50 shades freed when we saw the world in his eyes? The tease was just too cruel. I find Mr Grey much more fascinating to be acquainted with which justifies a fourth book.

Who's with me?

I love your idea. One of my favorite parts is when she tells the story of how they met from his perspective. I loved that!
06:17 PM on 05/25/2012
We got #ChristiansView trending on Twitter! We want "More" from Christian Grey for sure!!! The entire trilogy, same dialogue, only from his p.o.v. would be so amazing I wouldn't know what to do with myself!!! My house would NEVER get cleaned I'm afraid! lol
06:13 PM on 05/25/2012
I SAID THE EXACT SAME THING!!!!! I re-read the entire trilogy trying to imagine everything from his point of view during lines like "...his expression impassive, giving nothing away..." ! I feel like I am in the Red Room of Pain with pent up passion waiting for E.L. James to write MORE from Christian's point of view! I started a trend on twitter #ChristiansView in support and outreach to the blessed author to hear our cries for MORE FIFTY! ;-) Follow me on Twitter @blueyes716

I do tend to get really involved with the hero and heroine of books, but this goes way beyond. I find myself longing for more, and sadly moping around because it's over. Not just the many intimate moments between those two characters, though. The sex became part of who they were, became part of what helped Christian.... I was so engrossed in the love story, I read all three books, almost 1600 pages, in 6 days.
