Have We Really Come Down to a Boys Against the Girls Fight?

Posted: 02/ 9/2012 9:25 am

This public debate on whether or not the Obama administration's sensible policy on covering birth control has turned into a boys against the girls fight. And the boys are out of touch and out of line.

Are Chris Matthews, Joe Scarborough, Mike Barnicle, EJ Dionne and George Will etc. going to run around the country telling men to wear condoms? And by the way, pay for them themselves? Because if that isn't their plan for the next few years, they need to keep quiet.

Guess what folks, people have sex. And when they do, unless women want to get pregnant, they need birth control. How dare these guys or anyone say that the young cleaning woman or secretary who just happens to work at a hospital or university owned by the Catholic church should not be able to get birth control paid for by her employer. And if she has a medical problem like endimetriosis where her doctor prescribes birth control pills for that, if they had their way she would have to buy them herself as well.

This issue isn't about religious freedom. 99% of Catholic women already use birth control. This issue is about men deciding that their medical needs are purely "medical" and yet women's medical needs are somehow subject to a political equation. If Catholic Bishops want to make their own rules as employers, then they can stop taking federal government subsidies for Medicaid and Medicare patients in their hospitals, or have their schools subsidized by government sponsored student loans. Church employees are already exempt under the administration guidelines. But they won't. Instead they will try to use political pressure to legalize their discrimination and corral their Democrat and Republican male acolytes to do their bidding for them.

America must not let political opinion be swayed on this issue by a bunch of male pundits spelling some sort of political doom for a president who wants to stand up for women's health.

Has this been covered by HuffPo? Saw it on Rachel last night:

Va. House says no exceptions on ultrasound viewing before abortion

http://www.newsleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2012120214007

RICHMOND — House of Delegates Republicans have rejected a last-ditch bid by Democrats to allow women seeking abortions to opt out of an invasive ultrasonic procedure under anti-abortion legislation set for a final House vote Tuesday.

Legislation that has advanced on the strength of a GOP majority would force women to undergo a “transvaginal ultrasound” that produces fetal images.

An amendment by Del. David Englin, D-Alexandria, would have allowed medical professionals to determine whether images can be obtained without being penetrated by equipment used in the ultrasound.

Women would have to give written consent to such a probe under Englin’s amendments, but not to sonograms that are not invasive. The amendment failed on 64-34 vote, setting the bill up for final House passage.
03:43 PM on 02/17/2012
Why would you be opposed to women seeing these sonograms? Are you afraid they might actually see it's not just a blob of unformed cells? Sonograms these days are amazing, you can see the child's facial features, that the child comforts itself by sucking his/her thumb, that the child has a personality, even in the womb. Nope, wouldn't want them to see THAT, would we. Personally, I think in addition to these sonograms these girls should also be shown pictures of aborted babies as well, so they fully understand the consequences of abortion.

And I'm quite sure this will not get posted because it doesn't agree with the new age liberal point of view!

Boys against girls fight? Grow up. There are plenty of crazy women out there who probably side with the church on this. I'd venture to guess two good examples of common sense deficiency are Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman. Undoubtedly they support not having BC on any health plan.

SP and MB are examples of internalizing the patriarchy.

it's still boys & girls, and the boys are winning. in fact, they're so powerful some would rather join them as a queen bee than fight them.

of course, MB was the only repub pres nominee who never enjoyed a surge. she got a taste of her own medicine...

Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman are both pro-life in that they are anti-abortion. They both not only talk that talk, they walk the walk and practice what they preach. I've never heard either of them speak out against contraceptives. But I'm sure they would side with the Catholic church because of the religious freedoms that are guaranteed by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

No. Not at all. What its come down to is this simple shakedown:

"Your charity must support Planned Parenthood or we'll hack your website, trash you on Facebook, assault you in the media, and scorch the ground so you can't raise funds in the future."

All this...against a women's breast cancer charity. Whew.

I tried to post something in agreement with you on this -- wasn't allowed. I guess the Huffington Post only complies with First Amendment rights to Freedom of Speech if the speech totally agrees with THEIR point of view. No one else is entitled to First Amendment protections apparently.

Not sure what your comment has to do with the article, but this women's breast cancer "charity" seems to want to keep women from getting breast cancer screenings. BTW, do you have something against free speech?
03:47 PM on 02/17/2012
For your information Planned Parenthood does not do mammograms, they farm this procedure out, which is part of the reason Komen wanted to discontinue donations to PP, to cut out the middle man so more of THEIR money went for breast cancer initiatives.

Under Section 1311(d)(4)(H) on pages 273 and 274 Obamacare exempts religious organizations that believe insurance is gambling which violates their religious beliefs. So Muslims, The Amish, etc. do not have to comply with this law and are not subject to a fine. These religious groups also happen to be very much anti-abortion and anti-contraception. So why are Catholics such a target? Why aren't Catholics entitled to exemption from this law in its entirety like these other groups? Further, this administration has issued thousands of waivers from the law to their pals, mostly unions. Why do these groups get a pass and not Catholics?

Actually established and settled law on this subject says that religious groups do not get to refuse to follow generally applicable laws.

They've been trying for over a century and its been before the supreme court twice. Lost every single time.

The first amendment does not mean what you think it means.
03:23 PM on 02/14/2012
Hosanna Tabor vs Smith -- a recent unanimous decision -- look it up.

If this matter makes it to the Supreme Court they will rule in favor of The Catholic Church. There is recent and clear precedent for this.
01:16 PM on 02/14/2012
That's because Muslims are all right with using contraception as long as the husband and wife consent to it and it doesn't harm the body or cause permanent sterility. As for the Amish, they prefer to stay out of politics so that's why they are not being targeted.
02:28 PM on 02/14/2012
Muslims are only alright with contraception if a pregnancy poses significant risk to the mother's life and health. This applies to abortion too, unless the mother's life and health is at risk, or the baby is seriously abnormal they don't allow abortion. I got this from a Muslim/American website.

The Amish vote, so they don't stay completely out of politics.

My point is that The Catholic Church is opposed to abortion and contraception, it is against their religious beliefs and everybody has known this for a very long time -- they should be exempted from this law too. That will settle that. If the women they employ want contraceptives they are free to get them, but pay for it themselves. If they have a problem with that they can find another job because the Catholic Church is NOT required to employ anyone. These women still have options.

These men are jealous that women CAN create life and they can't. My mom was raised catholic (born 1948) and her mom was one of the "four pillars of the church". My mom observed that they all only had two kids. For men, it's like they feel like less of a man if they can't get a women pregnant (well, some men). In our case, we can't afford any more kids. Birth control pills are making a huge difference for us. If they got too expensive for my husband and me, then who's paying for accidental babies (and a bigger home)? Not all women on birth control are single and "can do without". Others are married and sex is an important part in keeping a marriage together. When the sex stops, cheating happens and that leads to divorce. Obama is respecting women and acknowledging that sex is common, married or not. The government isn't paying for unwanted pregnancies, the least they can do is help with the birth control cost. I understand being is anti-abortion but it crosses the line into not okay to be against birth control. You aren't ending a life with birth control, you're not creating it to begin with. How many kids killed by their parents were accidents due to lack of birth control? It's a big expense on the govenment to pay for kids in group homes. There would be less of them if birth control was inexpensive? Taxpayers pay for those kids.

NEScan, you're not very deep, are you?

Creating life is the MOST POWERFUL thing one can do.

That's why women don't have to do stupid things to prove they are powerful. They KNOW they're powerful.

It's like how big dogs ignore the bark of a little dog. Women are secure in their ability to create life, and you betcha men are jealous...this is why they over-compensate. And it's also why they devalue women.

Women claim all the rights with regard to pregnancy and birth. This seems reasonable. But if women have all the rights, why do men have any responsibility?
If a woman wants to prevent pregnancy, her male partner has nothing to say. If a woman wants to become pregnant and have a child, her male partner has nothing to say but is responsible for the decision made by the woman. How is this in any way fair?
When a woman becomes pregnant, she alone has the power to decide whether or not she carries the child to term. The father has no legal or practical way to alter her decision. If she wants to abort the fetus, the father cannot stop her. If she wants to deliver a child, the father cannot require she abort the fetus. The woman can then make the father an indentured servant, requiring him to support a child he does not want.
Women claim all the rights with regard to childbirth, abortion and contraception. Why are men in any way held responsible for the decisions made by women?

You can't whine about women wanting someone else to pay for their safe sex ... and then demand women foot the bill for men's safe sex.

As for pregnancy the comparison you are looking for is organ/tissue/fluid donation. And you are absolutely correct. Nobody may force anybody to donate organs/tissue/fluid to anyone else for any reason.

This is a good thing. And the day we change it people like you are going to be the first people on the menu for forced donation.
02:37 PM on 02/14/2012
Who is demanding that women foot the bill for men's safe sex? BOTH genders have a responsibility here. If a woman does not want to become pregnant then it's HER responsibility to take care of that and these days there are MANY options available to her. If a man does not want to become a father then it's HIS responsibility to make a trip to the drug store or take care of it in a more pernanent way. The only other option available to both of them is DON'T HAVE SEX! This is not rocket science, folks!

Wait, if a woman wants to get pregnant, her male partner has nothing to say? I'm pretty sure he has a say in this.

So, what do you suggest, remove all legal parental responsibilities from men or remove all reproductive choice from women?
01:13 PM on 02/17/2012
Women do not have the right to force fatherhood on a man against his will, anymore than a man has the right to force her to do anything. BOTH people are equally responsible for creating a life. If he does not want to be a father it's HIS responsibility to see to it he doesn't create a baby. If she does not want to be a mother it's HER responsibility to see to it she doesn't create a baby. If she wants to be a mother but he doesn't, she needs to find someone else who is willing and vice versa. And when accidents happen because neither of them were bright enough to protect themselves because one relied on the other BOTH of them are equally responsible. It's called personal responsibility. YOUR sex life is YOUR responsibility -- PAY FOR IT YOURSELF!

I have a solution. We women will from now on only have immaculate conceptions. Then we present ourselves to the Catholic church and demand that the church takes care of the new Jesus we are carrying and raises him and gives him a good education. The only problem I see is when it turns out that we are carrying a girl. Obviously the catholic church hates women. Are they going to abort the girl?
03:47 PM on 02/13/2012
It is not 99 percent. When you quote from a source, LOOK BEYOND the headline

"Nearly 70 percent of Catholic women use sterilization, the birth control pill or an IUD, according to the Guttmacher Institute research."

When the Church thinks saving a woman's life is intrinsically evil, it is time for us to defend ourselves: A woman in her 11th week of pregnancy was admitted to a Catholic hospital. Her doctor said without an abortion the woman had a 100% chance of dying. The nun in charge authorized an abortion and the woman did survive. The nun was excommunicated for authorizing the abortion. The church's position was that the woman should have been allowed to die along with her fetus. Google nun excommunicated and read the story. Then think if that were your wife or your sister or another loved one.” I realize that it is easy to dismiss this if it will never happen to you. Should a woman have to bear the burden of the cost of life saving medical intervention because a bunch of bishops of a faith she does not ascribe to thinks she should be allowed to die?

An incredibly bad argument. Making birth control "free" either makes women pay for it in insurance premiums instead or forces others to pay for it for them. Neither is a good idea. If it is "free" it distorts the decision making process. There could be a method that works for $10 a month. If it is "free" women might take the $200+ a month option for a benefit that is only perceived or tiny like taking a pill every week or month versus every day.

I have to laugh with the whole getting men to buy birth control. Like women need the government to help in that. If the man won't buy birth control for you DON'T HAVE SEX WITH HIM. Maybe its just me, but that seems like a red flag.

Interesting logic.."we" are already paying for Viagra, etc. Birth Control will be just as "free" as all other prescription drugs probably with co-pays. It will just be now covered with health insurance..something that everyone will be paying for..no matter what, people pay. I would rather pay for insurance to cover birth control than deal with paying for all of the consequences of none.
03:50 PM on 02/13/2012
"I would rather pay for insurance to cover birth control than deal with paying for all of the consequences of none. "

That should be your choice; just as others should have their choices.
03:04 PM on 02/14/2012
The correct logic would be that health insurance shouldn't pay for either Viagra or birth control. It should pay for things that are medically necessary, period. Anything beyond that simply drives up the cost for the primary benefit of those who make birth control pills, viagra, etc... .

Birth control isn't expensive. You can get a version of the pill for $9 per month. A woman can only get pregnant for 48 hours or so per month. So the "need" of birth control can be fulfilled by simply not having sexual intercourse during that time, using condoms, or doing whatever you can think of to avoid the sperm and egg from coming into contact during that time. It certainly doesn't need to be provided on a health insurance policy that costs hundreds if not thousands per month.

Which is exactly what has to be done for you to receive "free" birth control.

If you read the headline, it is "98 percent" of catholic women use contraceptive. This author adjusts it up to "99 percent" because that's a nice round number that matches "99 percent" for everything good, and 1 percent for everything bad.

But on reading the story, one learns it is a wee bit less than 70 percent.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/14/98-percent-catholic-women-birth-control_n_849060.html

"Nearly 70 percent of Catholic women use sterilization, the birth control pill or an IUD, according to the Guttmacher Institute research."

Still, that's over half of all Catholic women who are using it. Probably more of them use it but won't admit it publicly. However, a good indication that they use birth control is that their families are smaller. It used to be common to see 8-10 children but now it's unusual to see that many of them.
