Organizing your home may seem overwhelming from time to time, but it doesn't have to be. Rather than throwing everything out or leaving the clutter as it is, find a manageable way to go through everything. Tackle one room at a time and see what you can do to prevent future clutter from building up. There are plenty of ways to organize your home right at your fingertips -- it just takes a little time and patience. Check out these tips on how to organize easily and effectively:

Bathroom:

  1. Clear the bathroom of anything you don't use.
  2. To keep counters clear, store your accessories in a plastic tub. Put the tub under the counter when it's not in use.
  3. To keep the shower clutter-free, buy caddies for shampoo, conditioner and other hair products.
  4. To keep medicine cabinets tidy, buy and install a magnet to keep track of scissors, tweezers, nail clippers and other personal care products.
  5. If you need more room in cabinets, roll up linens instead of stacking them to provide additional shelf space.

Closet/Bedroom Area:

  1. Have a hamper at the ready for dirty clothes.
  2. Get rid of old clothes, shoes and other accessories.
  3. Separate and pack up clothes by season to free room on the racks. Store out-of-season items in a closet shelf area or underneath the bed.
  4. Hang smaller clothing items -- gloves, hats, scarves, etc. -- on racks for easy management and access.
  5. Install a shoe rack for easy access and management of your footwear.

Kitchen:

  1. Organize cabinets in order of glasses, plastic storage containers, plates, kidware, etc. Group together for easy access and management.
  2. Do the same with your pantry and foods -- spices, canned goods, cooking ingredients (flour, sugar, etc.).
  3. Organize your refrigerator door, if possible, according to condiments, cooking ingredients and other items you might need.
  4. Install a spice rack for easy organization and access. Consider alphabetizing and labeling the heads of each spice jar in case you're looking down at them.
  5. Create a recipe book out of the cards, pages and other papers to hold your recipes. It will be easier to access and manage than looking through drawers.

Other Tips:

  1. Everything must have a place. Regardless of where it is -- entryway, living room, dining room, etc. -- assign a place to an item and make sure every family member knows where that is. That way, nothing gets lost.
  2. Put trash baskets and recycle bins in each room of the house to promote cleanliness and eco-friendliness in your home.
  3. Create a system when entering and leaving your home -- where keys go, how to lay out shoes, etc. -- so everything stays clean and in its place.
  4. Clean, clean, clean! Your home only stays de-cluttered if the dust and debris are removed on a regular basis. If you don't have time, call a cleaning service to do it and pay about $150.
  5. Stay the course. Don't give up, even when it seems like most things are organized. It takes one misstep to go back ten steps.

Items to Invest In

To help keep your home well-organized, purchase items that aren't expensive but still help you achieve your goal. These include:
  • Hangers
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Jars
  • Binders
  • Hooks

These are only a few of the organization options available to help you achieve your master goal. Consult with a home organizer if you need more tips on what to do or how to start your home organization project. Remember, the goal is less clutter, not more!
