Ophiuchus and the "New Zodiac" -- Busted!

The current media hype about Ophiuchus as "the new 13th zodiac sign" has sent folks spinning into an astrological identity crisis. But the whole thing is untrue!

"Ophiuchus has nothing to do with western astrology," said expert astrologer Rick Levine. "It's not an astrology issue. It has to do with the stars -- it's not a sign, it's a constellation."

"There are four seasons each with a beginning, middle and end," Levine continued. "That makes 12 zodiac signs, and there's no such thing as a 13th astrological sign."

So why are people freaking out, wondering if they went to bed last night a Gemini and woke up a Taurus? Here are the answers you've been waiting for on this cosmic controversy:

What is Ophiuchus?

Ophiuchus is a large modern constellation commonly represented as a man grasping the snake represented by the constellation Serpens.

Is Ophiuchus the 13th zodiac sign?
No. Ophiuchus is just a constellation. Even the founding text for astrology (Tetrabiblos by Claudius Ptolemy, written 170 AD) mentions just 12 signs. Though a very small fraction of western astrologers who follow a different, constellation-based zodiac, or those who follow Vedic astrology, may use Ophiuchus as the 13th zodiac sign, or assign different dates to the signs used in western astrology.

How did this whole myth get started?
It began when astronomy professor Parke Kunkle of Minneapolis Community and Technical College told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune about the procession of stars over time. He said "Three thousand years ago the sun was 'in' whatever it was in. Now it's about a whole constellation off from that." Kunkle's quote was picked up by FOX News and other media outlets, and the false information went viral because people mistakenly assume that astrology is based on the constellations. But that's not true at all.

So what is the truth?

Western astrology is based on the four seasons, not on constellations -- and the seasons don't change. As Levine said above, there are four seasons, each with a with a beginning, middle and end, which adds up to 12 zodiac signs. There is no 13th sign. Period.

What can we learn from this?

Listen to the experts, and don't believe everything you read until you check your facts. There are a lot of people out there who think they understand astrology -- or any other subject -- when they really don't.

What does this mean for you?
Nothing! Your zodiac sign hasn't changed, and it never will. Learn your real Sun sign based on western astrology -- your personalized Cosmic Profile shows your Sun, Moon and Rising signs -- plus so much more -- and it's FREE!

The idea of the number 13 associated with astrology is an abomination. The 12 month cycle came about because of a correlation between the cycles of the moon(12 months) and the movement of the Sun. The moon cycle is a key component and one most essential to early Astrology. Although it is true that the progression of the sun through the various Constellations has drastically changed over the centuries, the original intention of the early astrological observers/compilers had more to do with the seasons than the Constellations. There have been many changes in the description and designation of the Constellations over the last 5,000 years, especially in the West; with many divergent interpretations and descriptions based on the particular viewer, his/her prevailing culture and his/her imagination. In the modern era, the true essence of Astrology is now metaphysical and has very little physical correlation to what is actually happening in the Heavens. This metaphysical philosophy is based on strong belief systems and not any physical reality. This philosophy has become entrenched because it seemingly offers "solutions to many spiritual conundrums. Whether it is accurate or not has more to do with the strength of your belief systems than with any logical awareness. The same with many other fixed spiritual concepts. As for the introduction of a 13th astrological sign, remember what Henry Ford said. "If it aint' broke, why fix it?"

When you were born the sun, star's, moon, planet's, and so much more was in a certain place. Maybe there is a 13th zodiac sign. But who care's, everyone has been living this way for thousand's of year's?! How can you have 13 zodiac's in 12 month's? It's like paying $11.00 for something that cost's $12.00! I think someone just came up with this to mix people up even more than we already are in life. Each sign has a certain element as well. How can someone just add in now another element? 1 element would be used more than the other 3. It's just totally wrong! I'm sure if the Babylonian's wanted to use 13 zodiac sign's they would have done so 2,000 year's ago. Honestly people, are we going to let some internet site's, TV sation's, or Radio's tell us what sign we are? Don't we let other people tell us how to act enough? Be who or what you want to be! I read on the one site that really this new change will only effect people born after 2009. So, go figured, they are saying "Everyone's zodiac sign is different, yet, Oh, only people after 2009". I don't even think they have their fact's strait to be tell the public properly yet!

Yes there is the phrase "What sign are you BORN under"? Well back then it would be Sagittarius.
Then now it is Ophiuchus. A lot of people seriously want to believe because they read the horoscope. To them it is a routine. They buy your books and imagine your love matches. They put awesome tattoos on them. It will be difficult if not impossible for some to change. But the universe is in constant change. You are either accepting this or you can be in denial.
All your bot software needs to be rewritten. This is a good thing in a time that needs stimulus.
Get to writing you! Fix your books to current.
Anybody born under a sign was still that sign. Just now when the stars are there they are corrected and give Ophiuchus a chance!

there are 13 signs, but lazy astrologists didn't want a snake because it would be 13 and not 12 like the months.
There is a constellation for each sign, and Ophicus shouldn't be the exception.

My Zodiac sign is: Cancer. I never liked being that sign. All it does is remind me of the disease Cancer. If I we meant to be another sign, I would take that Zodiac sign in a minute.

Believe what you like. It's your right as a human being. We are not one-dimensional. And
thinking shouldn't be that way either. They can change whatever they want. Call it whatever they want. We know who we are. Rhetoric can be innocuous like a yawn or as
debilitating as disease. But both are catchy.

And another thing; you state "this whole myth began when astronomy professor Parke Kunkle of Minneapolis Community and Technical College told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune about the procession of stars over time". Sorry to debunk your theory; but it is also incorrect - the discovery of the 13th sign was around the late 1980's/early 1990's. A British News Broadcaster, actually did a report on Ophiuchus; and for 1 week after that; the British Newspapers; did 2 different horoscopes... 1 based on the 12-sign system; and 1 based on the 13-sign system.

Here is the traits for the 13ths sign - just in case you wished to know what they were. Read it, then decide yourselves if the 13-sign system is real or not.

♦ November 30 - December 17 - OPHIUCHUS ♦

Ophiuchus is the hidden sign! Because this is a new sign for the millennium the delineation will be a little longer than the other 12 signs. You are a natural therapist and healer of the world. There seems to be an emotional distance of some kind-from one parent, or from both-or, perhaps, from being an only child, and so, in childhood, you can feel cut off or neglected in some way. You are sensitive and intuitive, this can at first, seem hard to handle, but it is precisely these experiences which later give you sympathy and the compassion to put out a helping hand to others.

Because you tend to see life in terms of health and sickness more than other people do, you can become fanatical about your health, changing cures and dietary regimes at an alarming rate. One week's panacea for all ills is forgotten the next moment, when something else takes its place. No one is ever well enough, however rosy-cheeked and energetic they may seem, and anyone who admits to feeling under par is bombarded with a range of the latest vitamins and a great deal of advice.

However well meant this may be, you often get the feeling that by turning so much of your loving care and your attention onto others, you are trying not to look too closely at yourself. This can be true, and until you do begin to listen to your inner voice and get in touch with your real feelings- which can, at times, be painful-you cannot heal yourself: and this you need to do before you can heal others.

All gifts and talents, when they remain unused and undeveloped, can turn sour and come out in surprising ways. In the case of those born beneath Ophiuchus, this often takes the form of interfering in the lives of others, and their conversation can range endlessly over a whole range of often quite imaginary woes-both their own and other people's-which they take great pleasure in discussing.

Once you make contact with your real healing powers, however, and allow that energy to flow, you tend to stop just handing out advice and start listening properly. Then, you are capable of helping those who are in need of comfort to come to terms with illness and depression, and to find a new constructive way of living. Like Asclepius, who raised the dead, you seem to understand the plight of people in despair, and to know how to light a candle in their darkness, to lead them back towards a fuller, happier life.

You are, in fact, extremely good at dealing with all kinds of people. You can tune into the underlying humanity in anyone, whether they are extrovert and straightforward, or more complex and inward looking. This ability to get on with anyone is a rare gift, making them welcome wherever you may go, and enabling them to help others.

Because you can identify with so many different types of people, you make not only the best therapists but also the best actors, actresses and entertainers, as this natural empathy means that you can enter into, and portray, almost any role. There is a link between drama and therapy: dreams, which therapists, use to discover just as drama does, which was thought of by the Greeks as being healing to the soul. And it is, in fact, often by example, and through parables and stories, that those born under Ophiuchus manage to enlighten to heal.

You do have a tendency, at times, to identify too strongly with other people. You can so easily absorb the pain, and the fantasies and dreams, of others that it can be hard for you to hold on to your own identity. You need to guard against this, and to learn how much of your strength you can afford to give to others, as well as where they end and someone else's' begins. This is especially true where intimate relationships with others are concerned, and until you learn to draw the line, you can attract people to you who take advantage of your sympathy and kindness. On the plus side, however, it is through your empathy and your ability to live out so many different roles, that you can do well in Thespian endeavours as well as discover what it means to be a rounded human being-and the wholeness which is th

Most astrologers have Triskaidekaphobia (the fear of the number 13, for those who didn't know). So when news about the possibilities of a 13th sign arose; then panic and fear struck through the astrologer community. So they try everything they can to debunk it. However, I did a huge write up about the 13th sign a couple of years ago; and even though at first some people where sceptical about it; once they read the traits for each of the 13 signs; they started to understand that in fact 13 signs was looking more a reality than a debunked possibility.

And as I've studied astrology, I now write up horoscopes for a group on Facebook; based on the 13 signs - YES with Ophiuchus included. And guess what - every one of the thousands of members on the group actually appreciate the new 13-sign system - and love the fact they have a choice now on which sign they wish to be - whether it be the traditional 12-sign or modern 13-sign zodiac.
