Helen of Troy was the Greek woman whose allure, it was said, "launched a thousand ships." Arianna Huffington is the Greek woman whose invitation, we know, launched a hundred buses.

Even though she's backing Jon Stewart's "Rally to Restore Sanity," and even though I now work for her, I had dismissed the event this Saturday on the Mall as self-indulgent, time-wasting comedy.

Until now.

The reason is that I watched two videos: one, of a thug named Tim Profitt pressing his shoe onto Lauren Valle's skull; the other, of Joy Behar calling Sharron Angle a bitch who's going to hell.

That was enough. I now think the rally is a fateful moment in this political campaign, an indispensable plea for a smidgeon of decency in a season of crazy, vicious assaults from both sides of the aisle.

For support I call in famous Irishmen, one of them 18th century conservative icon Edmund Burke, the other 20th century poet W.B. Yeats.

Burke said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Yeats wrote in his poem "The Second Coming" that, "the center cannot hold" in an era when "the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity."

Less than two years after Barack Obama's inauguration offered the country a moment of what I thought was peace, we are at each other's throats with an intensity not seen in decades.

I'm all in favor of arguing. I wrote a book (The Thirteen American Arguments) about how debates are the essence of our being.

But for them to work we need to acknowledge, however grudgingly, that the people we are arguing with are human beings.

For a host of reasons -- some valid, some cynical -- we are in a season in which we refuse to accept the humanity of the people we oppose.

Why? Well, the political parties and their leaders want to hold onto or acquire power. Corporations and unions want to hold onto their economic prerogatives. Ideologues want their views confirmed. Consultants want to make money. The media wants headlines.

Where is the rational discussion of the country's future? Where is the earnestness, the specificity or the disinterested (though not UNinterested) patriotism in the name of all of America?

Probably not at Jon Stewart's rally. But at least he's headed in the right direction.

In a few hours people will try to reclaim sanity in Washington, and about time.
Hopefully the focus will be on fun, amazement and wonderment – these were goals of royal jesters which were necessitated after a thousand years of European diplomacy, intrigue, and occasional friendship. The tradition was discontinued by Cromwell and others who thought laughter was foolish. But laughter is a good remedy for the evils of intrigue and diplomacy.
When a person speaks it is polite to listen and smile irrespective of their words or lies, it is not evil to be polite, but it is evil to allow known deception to continue without comment. When Abu Ghraib was blamed on a few bad apples, the appropriate response was hysterical laughter; and when Indonesian President (General) Yudhoyono says the torture seen in the videos recently smuggled from Papua is the work of a few bad apples, the appropriate response is hysterical laughter.
People who can laugh generally have a better appreciation of reality.

Howard. What a sweet heart and clear mind to form an opinion and then, with the facts, change it. Wonderful and so uncommon. Respect Howard. Hope it's a virus and we all catch it.

On one hand what is happening holds great potential for this country and by extension, the known universe. It is easy to recognize the pure insanity of peoples behavior, in this time of stenching hatefulness. But better in the open light of day then below the surface. Each day it becomes more clear people of intelligence, perhaps even vision, become involved citizens and vote. There are truly so many ignoramuses, racist, hollier then thou's, and just plain stupid persons out there that will vote against their own best interest. To be our "brothers keeper" we need to outnumber these "lost souls" at the voting booth and try to show them the light.
08:29 PM on 10/28/2010
"we" - hempster, these "lost souls" - do you know them? are you maybe one of them and don't even know it? just part of the "simulacra", another pawn in the end game!

confusion abounds in our time hempster, your just seeing the tip of the iceberg and if we live long enough we will be startled by what happens as the rising and the setting of the Sun continues and we do not know how long that will continue to happen!?! smoke more cannabis;

Most of the insanity messages are not the result of debates; they come from repressed bigotry and/or lack of information on the topic. The hatred comes from some innate ability to believe that "them" or "us" is real, the "thems" belonging to some sub-human state where it is safe to hate them...or...even kill them. The military propaganda films are full of that approach toward the "enemy". Call them "kooks", "krauts", "rag-heads", or any other demeaning phrase of the day and it is easier, much easier, to banish them forever. Sharron Angle scares the bejesus out of me with her talk of guns and sly suggestion of armed rebellion. She IS lacking a lot of information as well and her self-righteous hate of various social outliers in our society is venomous, but as for going to hell, probably a bit that would play well during the Inquisition but lacks any real threat in this day and age. But Joy is apt...and expected...to go ballistic on any controversial topic or person. That is the power that the media gives to those who actually enjoy flinging out their sentiments. And hopefully the guy who stood on the head of one of Rand Paul's critics will get jail time. But if sanity is the center of our social well-being, we are not living in an era that promotes it now. Many folks you'd never suspect of paranoia now talk openly of having loaded guns. Scary.

Rational discussion is to be found in the pragmatism and the intelligent competent grasp of America that President Obama possesses.

Unfortunately he has been demonized.
Unfortunately the national dialogue has been distracted from basic logical emphasis and progress, all the way over to the petty, childish, bratty end of the spectrum. The worst, basest part of too many brains has been turned on like a diarrhea spigot and is flowing freely, soiling & spoiling & smelling up & ruining the greatest form of modern CIVILIZED government. It is gross, it is disgusting.

So although I agree with you for the most part, Mr. Fineman, I have to ask how long should rational people take this crap before we come out swinging? I have had this ridiculousness up to my eyeballs and can't stomach anymore.

I have never been more proud to be a liberal progressive American, or to be drawn to intelligence and competence and excellence. And no more apologies, especially to people who act like uncivilized morons.

It's true these humans I don't call them human beings would kill you or hurt you in a minute without a second thought if given half a chance, and they are already trying to destroy Democracy as we know it, and we are told either we "Liberals are just as bad with their extremist views", you know that extremist 'Public Option' we wanted as did 60-80% of the population, or don't worry this type of hatred of the teabaggers is normal, you know like walking into the public square with guns strapped to your legs ids normal. They want liberals to just sit at home and take it. Howard you go have a decent discussion with a Teabagger then we'll talk.
05:36 AM on 10/28/2010
Why should there be discussion? Did the demos invite discussion before they saw they were going to get trounced in the upcoming election ? Hell no.
All I heard was "WE ARE IN CHARGE NOW!" ..

Hey Nuke.... you only heard that on FOX your propaganda station of choice....In reality, the current administration attempted to appease the Reps in Congress and kept getting stonewalled, double talked and then defiantly targeted for extinction as per the orders of Limbaugh and Beck....

If Obama and Biden don't want another 4 years of this, will Colbert and Stewart bravely take their place? The Republicans run rank amateur jokers like W and Palin, so now it's time for the Democrats to run the real thing. We'll still go to Hell in a hand basket, but at least we'll be laughing all the way there.

I am grateful to Stewart and Colbert for having the courage to do what the media does not. I am going to the mall to see the smart people who are busy but refuse to be manipulated. The mainstream media is skimming money off the top of the confusion it creates. America is more information-poor than ever before, thanks to the media machines who keep the secrets and tout the nonsense. See you on the mall!

Janelynne, Thank you. You are so correct about the News, lately they don't inform they inflame and keep repeating over and over again, the same lies. Stewart and Cobert are doing the public a GREAT SERVICE.
Especially for the Young People, because he OLD ONES have truly lost their minds.

Look at how much time they spend giving Palin, an Air Head, the attention she gets. Palin, now think she is Presidential Material.

I wish they would spend that much time informing the public with the TRUTH.

To all the people decrying the "false equivalency" of Fineman's examples: He nowhere says they are equivalent. He merely holds them up as two examples of political insanity, which show that it is not confined to just one side. So, critics, is your point that insanity is OK as long as it's from the left, and as long as it doesn't consist of actual physical violence? Well then, bear this in mind: The head-stamping incident, while it could have had more serious consequences, actually appears to have only resulted in one woman having a slightly sore neck, and a few thousand or maybe tens of thousands of votes haemorraging away from the Republicans. A widely-reported vicious diatribe, on the other hand, can inflame the political situation resulting in maybe thousands of assaults, with many injuries and even a few deaths. So, which is worse? One sore neck and maybe a couple of unexpected Democrat victories, or potentially thousands of assaults, dozens of injuries and even a few deaths? And rather more importantly, is there any reason why we should placidly accept either of these possibilities? Shouldn't we stand up against every kind of viciousness, regardless of its exact nature and the side it originates from? Before answering, bear in mind that if you think inflammatory comments are OK in general then you have to love Glenn Beck, while if you think they're OK but only when from the left then you have to be like him..

Do you really believe the comment from Joy Behar will incite violence or change votes? Yet, you attempt to equate this remark with the daily onslaught of beck. Your comparison is as delusional as Fineman's. Are you aware that the perp who stomped Ms Valle expects an apology? And this from one of the brave "patriots" who proclaim themselves to be the defenders of freedom, the Constitution, Mom, and apple pie. Please! Words do not equal assault...one is criminal and one is not. How does this escape you?

Yo Gabe, can we get a source on your assertion that the perp expects an apology. Or is that just a lead in to your self-delusional and self-indulgent monotribe about the essential nature of all the people standing in that crowd (save the ones holding Conway signs, I presume). While we're discussing self-indulgence, please allow me: Who in the world would possibly care about anything Joy Behar has to say about anything?

Here's the real non-equivalence: The 'perp' was a non-entity who just happened to be associated with the Rand Paul campaign, and was fired from it the instant that news of his action became known. I don't know what he did for them, but I doubt that it was anything as responsible as sticking stamps on envelopes, say, because that would be too mentally taxing. He's such a nobody that I notice some of the commenters have to justify the lather they're getting into and getting others into by talking about "Rand Paul's" assault, conflating the candidate with the fired thug as if Paul had been momentarily occupying his body.

Joy Behar is a political commentator with a national following who is unlikely to be fired no matter how far she drags the political discourse down. Rather, the more she does it, the greater her reward will be. I'll admit the first 'bitch' might have been excused as satire, or something; but the repetition of that, and of 'evil', and of 'going to hell', the Hitler comparison .. don't you think it all might have been just a little OTT? Don't you rail against Glenn Beck whenever he says half as much about somebody on the left? Or alternatively (since you never did say which category you fit into) don't you just love Glenn Beck and his beautifully crafted daily onslaughts?

I can't help but think about the violence and name calling and wonder where it will lead. There has been a recent suicide that brought about the public attention in attempt to put and end to it. And no, I'm not refering to the political crazy season we have all witnessed but the bullying of teenagers. But then again, is there a difference?

Mr. Fineman, you're half right. To echo many of the posters on here, there is no equivalancy between assault and a boorish statement. Its been going on for years, Speaker Sam Rayburn said nearly fifty years ago that one of the main differences between democrats and republicans was that we treated their presidents better than they treat ours. Well, we saw it begin to escalate with the Clintons' and with the election of Obama its reached a cresendo with those on the right who will say and do anything in their efforts to destroy this president. He held out the hand of bipartisanship to these people, nominating republican after republican to high office and their response was to spit on it. Their behaviour is beyond despicable and when you have an entire media outlet, in faux noise, promoting violence nearly daily, ie beck saying things like "I could kill Michael Moore, no, I really could" and right wing talk radio openly hoping for the presiden to fail, what do we expect? They have no respect for country, or institutions nor for individuals. The true base nature of the republican party is finally exposing itself for all to see and it is a horrific picture. The republican party of today is rife with violent and ignorant people that you can no longer have discourse with. I fear for my country. Why do conservatives hate America?

Well, gee Fred, if you didn't lie so friggin' much maybe someone could have a discourse with you! I'm wasting my time, but I'll try to explain it to you. It's not the republicans doing this to Obama and crew. It's every person, young or old, rich or poor, white, black etc. who is tired of being told one thing and then seeing exactly the opposite being done. Change we can believe in replaced by a hijacking of the public pocketbook. The President is failing because he is too damned dumb to realize that THE PEOPLE are tired of being played off against each other. We expected more integrity from him. He promised more. We got much less than we expected, indeed, much less than we had even become accustomed too. Conservatives don't hate America. They just can't stand idly by while the politically-correct-horse-dung-and-wishful-thinking crowd (such as yourself) try to turn America into something it cannot be. Don't blame the media. Blame yourself.

Well, gee Lewis, there you go again, in the words of your conservative icon, Ronald Reagan. "if you didn't lie so friggin much". Well I read your post, I didn't see any thing beyond the tired old right wing talking points. The public pocketbook was hijacked in 2001, you are aware of course of the fact that President Bush added an average of 612 billion dollars a year to the public debt? That when asked about the out of control spending, Cheney made his famous or rather infamous, deficits don't really matter, statement. And now as President Obama tries to repair the damage done by that crowd, suddenly you're concerned? Touching. You can't stand idly by? You did it for eight years Lewis and now that this President and those of us who believe in an America that stands for something try to restore some modicum of that your ilk dismantled during the Bush regime, you've suddenly found voice. Once again, touching. Why do conservatives hate working Americans?

Speaking of lies, you seem to be spouting off much of them. A tax cut for 95% of Americans through the Economic Recovery Act. Healthcare Reform that he ran on as part of his platform and that the majority of Americans voted for and wanted so that healthcare is more affordable and insurance companies can't screw us anymore. A stimulus plan that prevented this country and thus the world from falling into an economic depression. Student loan relief. Pell Grant increases. Tax credits for small businesses, etc...

"...much less than we had even become accustomed too." What of any of the things I've listed did you have more of with Republicans in charge? And what exactly, and be specific, did Republicans give you that you are now going without or have less of?
07:53 PM on 10/27/2010
The poet was ever the one to tell the truth: "the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity." The word that jumps out at one is 'passion.' Compare Hillary Clinton with Sarah Palin. Who is the most passionate? Compare Jon Stewart with Glenn Beck. Who is the most passionate? So I ask: Whatever happened to the passion of democrats? There simply are no democrat firebrands. This kind of Repub/Tea Party passion we see has only two causes: it comes from conviction or it comes from fear. I think most of it come from fear. A lack of passion has two main causes: being sated, jaded or being fearful. I see more fear than enoui. So I ask: What are we all afraid of? Think about it. Go deep. What makes you afraid, really afraid, in 2010? What is happening or not happening in your life that would give you a sense of peace, confidence, kindness?

Well, thanks for asking Zoe. For openers the thing I truly fear is that the upcoming election will not result in an overwhelming defeat of the democrats, that is to say a complete repudiation of the liberal-progressive movement that has held sway over that party these past two years. But, whether it happens or not.....well......I guess I'll just tend store. Personally, I don't think that America needed to be fundamentally transformed. I guess a lot of folks don't think so. A few things need to be fixed here and there, always did, but I always thought that this country was a great place to live and be proud of. I'd like my grandaughter to feel the same way.
01:38 PM on 10/28/2010
Ah, see I just wish we could have other options. I am a democrat. I tend to vote democrat in National elections and republican in local elections. I have voted for the local Independent for Congress this year. What a breath of fresh, moderate air. Not all democrats are crazy liberal spendthrifts, and not all republicans are awful, selfish religious zealots. Unfortunately, they seem to be the ones getting elected. Personally, I'd like to see how the public option works. Give it a chance. On the other hand, I think we could cut the Fed Govt 10% across the board, and we wouldn't notice a thing.
