Earlier today, at DownWithTyranny, we discussed how the Republican brand is so tarnished nationally, that even in deeply red districts in The South, voters are turning away from the hatred and divisiveness the GOP represents to embrace the Democratic message of change and of shared prosperity for working families. Nowhere is that more obvious than in North Carolina's 8th CD, where progressive Larry Kissell is successfully challenging Bush rubber stamp Robin Hayes to a rematch. Hayes is best known in the district for crying like a little girl when Tom DeLay forced him to change his "no" vote on CAFTA, an unfair trade bill that helped to devastate North Carolina industry. Other than that rather embarrassing and humiliating episode, the multimillionaire out-of-touch congressman has kept his emotions to himself. Today's NY Observer, however, reveals, just in time for Halloween, another side of Robin Hayes: the Michele Bachmann side.
McCain called on two of the most dependable GOP rubber stamps in the North Carolina congressional delegation to work the crowd up at a rally in Concord, NC on Friday-- hyperbolic closet queen Patrick McHenry and the generally more cautious Hayes. But Hayes had a little... episode. After McHenry riled up the audience-- not very hard when you consider the kinds of little fascist animals who go to Republican rallies these days-- Hayes, at least at first, tried to calm it down so it would resemble a political rally instead of a KKK cross burning.
"It's like black and white," someone in the crowd at the Cabarrus Arena & Events Center yelled out, laughing. McHenry let the remark pass and finished his speech. He yielded the microphone to Representative Robin Hayes, who prefaced his comments by saying it was important to "make sure we don't say something stupid, make sure we don't say something we don't mean." Republicans, he reminded the crowd, were kind people. Plus, he added, the liberal media had shown itself eager to distort such remarks. With the crowd duly chastened and put on best behavior, he accused Obama of "inciting class warfare" and said that "liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God."
Larry is leading Hayes in the polling right now, but Hayes and his corporate allies are pouring money into the district. As of September 30 Hayes had $1,113,272 in his campaign bank account and Larry has only $250,134. Hayes is blanketing the district with negative smear attacks and Larry isn't up on broadcast TV. Two ways to go here-- donate directly to Larry's campaign at his Blue America page or go to our SaysMe.tv site, pick one of the two approved Kissell and run your own campaign on whatever stations you want. Prime time ads on MSNBC are $57 and on CNN late nights they're $29. We have a 30 second version of this great spot:

Who cares about ’08? I’m fantasizing about the 2012 dream ticket: Alaska governor Sarah Palin for president and Minnesota’s Congresswoman Michele Bachmann for VP. A Palin-Bachmann ticket would be the first ever Pro-America, all female, all hottie ticket. Palin knows the location of all the pro-America spots in our country. Bachman knows how to sort the pro-America crowd from the anti-America crowd.
The two of them together could conduct public show trials ala Joe McCarthy and Joe Stalin to weed out the uppity America-haters in our midst. Like Chairman Mao, Palin and Bachmann could start a cultural revolution and send recalcitrant America-haters into the countryside to hang out with real Americans in reeducation camps. That would make those “elites” change their tune.
We’ve got to do something to get those snobs to quit reading leftist newspapers, listening to public radio, hugging trees, sipping chardonnay and eating sushi. In a Palin-Bachmann administration they'd be introduced to the Real America. Like Palin, they'd start droppin’ their g’s and stop pallin’ around with terrorists. By golly, if these anti-Americans only knew a few real Americans, they’d become regular people, real Americans like Joe the plumber, Phil the bricklayer, Wendy the waitress, Rose the teacher, Penny the prostitute, Minnie the moocher, etc.
And if that isn’t enough, a few years in a Soviet style gulag would do the trick.
Palin-Bachmann in 2012! You go girls!
LOL... I'm sorry, but what more can one do with this?
As if things weren't bad enough already for the GOP this year, Republicans are actively trying to commit political suicide. I guess, when they're all standing in the unemployment lines this holiday season, perhaps, they'll finally get the message.
"liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God."
That Sen. McCain stands by these comments is deeply troubling. The republican party has become divisive that it is hard to imagine the damage done this year will asily be forgotten by Democratic and Independent voters, this vitriol will be a lasting stain on the GOP.
GET OUT AND VOTE for Obama/Biden and every down ballot Democratic canidate.
Not to mention that there is a huge chunk of the American population who are liberal AND religious.
You don't win elections by attacking big chunks of the population, particularly those in the middle of the spectrum.
That video is amazing. Larry Kissell has to win this one. We can't go 2 more years with Robin Hayes. He is an embarrassment.
What is wrong with these divisive, ignorant people unfortunately is more than skin deep, and it's elephant skin at that. You are talking about people like most of my closest family, so I really have had to do some looking into this question to save my sanity. Best explanation I've come across so far is John Dean's book "Conservatives Without Conscience." The most dramatic thing to observe is the tolerance for cognitive dissonance. It is absolutely typical, your description of Hayes going in a breath from "Republicans are kind" to "liberals hate real Americans." My mom can go from bragging about being inspired by Albert Schweitzer's philosophy of "reverence for life" to bellowing for carpet-bombing all Iraq in a sentence. One thing you can be sure of: facts, logic, and even self-interest have no impact whatsoever. (I say this from experience.) The good news (fingers crossed) is that the reason John McCain's campaign is the way it is is that these hard cases are all he's got, so that's who he's campaigning for, and there are far too many of them, but not enough to win, even with dirty tricks and dorked machines. (fingers crossed)
"With the crowd duly chastened and put on best behavior, he accused Obama of "inciting class warfare" and said that "liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God."
This guy is an unintentional Stephen Colbert.
Life is satire, satire is life.
Damn right.
I love that you can run the ad in your own name in Hayes's District. He is a real SOB and I love that I can run the ad in his living room with my name at the end. FU Hayes.
