Alex Wagner Talks Donald Trump's Presidential Candidacy With Lawrence O'Donnell (VIDEO)

Posted: 04/14/11 12:41 AM ET

HuffPost's Alex Wagner appeared on "The Last Word" with Lawrence O'Donnell Wednesday to discuss Donald Trump's recent surge in polls ranking potential Republican presidential candidates, especially among independent voters.

"It's a constant reversal here with Donald Trump," Wagner said, referring to the notion that America's most famous real estate mogul will change his political positions according to popular sentiment. She also noted that one of the strangest aspects of Trump's alleged candidacy is that, despite having "arguable business bona fides," he continually endeavors to embrace "the far right of these wacky social conservative positions."

Trump's not running...not as a Republican or as an independent. His only interest is hyping the ratings of his TV shows. All those who think we need a "businessman" in the White House ignore the fact that business interests were calling the shots for most of the last 30 years. Running a country is more like running a family than like running a business.

O'Donnell should warn us old guys before Alex makes an appearance on his show.

Trump is the GOP's Alvin Green.

I like Lawrence but it is obvious he is worried about Trump getting more traction. My guess is Trump will get on his show and have a good debate and the right will have a heyday with it. Trump is not afraid of a fight and Lawrence is a very small person in comparison. I bet Trump will go on Maddow as well.

What really amazes me is how insular the political media is because the ones they attack are rarely sitting in front of them and not expected to. The Donald is more than likely going to change that formula. I think he would look forward to the opportunity to lock horns with them on their shows. I hope Trump runs because it is going to be so much fun to watch. I'm a Obama voter and admit I like Trump, birther primary marketing scheme aside the dude could win.

I am 47 and have never voted for a republican president in my life, I am fed up with Obama's total lack of leadership and his signature on trade deals that will continue to decimate our manufacturing base and create sweatshops in third world countries. For the first time I will vote GOP if Trump is there.

Read this article on Obama's latest trade deal in Latin America. I cannot in good conscience vote for anybody who supports the immoral practice of slave wage free trade.

This is ridiculous --

First of all, noone is scared of Trump. I mean that sincerely. He is a side-show and his birtherism is a powerful discredit to the Republican party.

Second -- you call yourself a "conservative republican" in another comment, and link the "American Conservative" magazine to make your point. I'm finding your claimed prior support for Obama here either naive or misleading.

Third -- I get that you are anti-free trade, and from a human rights perspective, I believe there are legitimate concerns with some of the deals we have signed. But do you think slapping huge tarriffs on foreign countries, as Trump has suggested, will actually HELP American manufacturing? How do you think other countries will react? Do you really think there is enough domestic demand to support our economy?

Trust me you don't know what you are saying, those people living quite well in the south american countries where he is doing business. Hay America have 15 million people out of work I don't think you have a leg to stand, stop complaining, the GOP push a stick up your ----- with Bush; you give this man two years and complaining? then go vote for the GOP; God bless you.

Lawrence, can you invite Alex every day on your show ... please?

I second that. I don't think I would ever tire of her.

Whatever you think about his hair or his bluster, the Donald has managed billions in business and payroll, pays his taxes and is loyal to his friends and family. This birther crap is a sure-fire way to get the press, and look how flustered the idiot Palin is about losing the spotlight.
I voted for President Obama only to find that he believes in and stands for nothing.
Trump would actually be the furthest left of any of the Repubniks and certainly more experienced in the real world than any Dems. He'd be the first Repub I ever voted for.

Pretty stupid. If he would run the country like he does his business we would be doomed. Our country can't file chapter 11 three times. We can't do a tv show with a bunch of nuts and drama queens. When Trump said, if we can't go into Lybia and take the oil, we shouldn't go in. It is not our oil to take. How would he like if others from another country would attempt to come over here and take something from us? They wouldn't like it. Stupidity flows from his mouth every time he opens it.

"arguable business bona fides." Excellent choice of words.
04:44 AM on 04/14/2011
Of course, the key word here is "arguable." This does not admit that Trump has actual business bona fides, only that he could argue that he does. It would be a weak argument considering his multiple bankruptcies. Alex was contrasting this with his nonexistant credentials in any other field. Indeed, he is nearly as ignorant as Palin, but might be even more dangerous in light of his unbounded hubris.

DONALD TRUMP ! .... What can I say about "The Donald" except .....

If Donald Trump won the RNC nomination, and by some wild & crazy flook, won the Presidency, believe me.... America hasn't seen NOTHIN YET ! Leaders of other nations would not like or trust him, and that would be our first problem. But before that happens, he would alienate just everyone that supported him with daily braggadocios statements!

You think the TEA PARTY gangs; "I'm Mr. Big Now," senators with their Lincoln type, Gettysburg Address speeches got on everyone's nerves, well Donal Trump would trump that with speeches saying he could do anything he wants because he's "RICH" just about everyday ! And that would have the entire nation ready to send him packing within a week of his election !

But even the RNC can't be this bankrupt in political candidates to select this guy ! Maybe this is why he's now talking about a run as an Independent ! But whatever, Donald Trump would be an American Disaster !

@Tugar Whatever happened to "We Learn More from our Failures Than From Our Successes"? At ledast he has business experience, There isnt a single person in OBAMAs circle that has ever owned a company. As far as alienating leaders of other countries, its really hard to imagine anyone doing a better job of alienating leaders of foreign countries than OBAMA has done. I love his no nonsense attitude. GO DONALD. In 2012 he will tell OBAMA the fraud. "YOU ARE FIRED"

Paul, Dear Heart ! ... I really hate to burst your bubble, but Donald Trump isn't that great at running his businesses either. He's faced a few bankruptcies concerning his casinos and construction companies within the last few years, and he's actually coasting on the Trump name ! Others actually own the posh, NYC Trump Tower site, but retain the "Trump" name for marketing purposes ! The name has always been associated with wealth, so why not keep it. It sounds better than "Smith Tower" ! ... After all, who knows who "Smith" is !

But get me wrong, I like Donald personally, at least for now ! I just don't want to see him get near the Presidency and start making problems for us as a nation, just by spouting off whenever he gets board, telling people: "Your Fired"! That may work for a TV show, but we don't need it as our Presidential Seal !

Noone has done more than Obama to alienate leaders of foreign countries? Were you in a coma for the first part of this century?

Trump is actually promising to alienate foreign leaders. I take him as his word. Except for the part where he thinks he can actually become president.
