Arianna And Cindi Leive Explain Sleep Challenge 2010 On 'The Joy Behar Show' (VIDEO)

Posted: 01/15/10 05:49 AM ET

Arianna and Glamour Editor-in-Chief Cindi Leive appeared on The Joy Behar show Thursday night to talk about Sleep Challenge 2010, a challenge to women to start getting the sleep that they need.

Both Arianna and Cindi explained why the challenge is a feminist issue. "We need to do success differently, we women," Arianna explained, "not by driving ourselves into the ground, not by walking through our days like zombies, but by actually being creative, being productive when we are not sleep deprived."

One sleep tip Arianna offered: Never have your blackberry, cell phone, or other devices charging near you when you sleep.

Cindi pointed to the weight maintenance benefits of a full night of rest.

It's great that you're reminding people (regardless of gender) that quality sleep isn't an option but a requirement for a productive life and a healthy mind/body.

Go to bed at a regular set time all of the time. Eliminate as many distractions as possible from your sleep area. Try to sleep at night when it's dark and when humans sleep best, but if you can't because of work or other reasons, make the room as dark as you can. Get regular exercise but not to a state of exhaustion. Eat healthy foods and drink water instead of caffeine and sodium laden soft drinks. If you're constantly fatigued, even after sleeping for eight hours, you might have a physical condition (potentially life threatening) preventing you from getting good sleep. Visit a sleep professional to help you pinpoint and rectify the problem.

SLEEP is a feminist issue? How about the weather? Eating? Hailing a cab? Purchasing toilet paper? I need to know so I can adjust my perspective in order to avoid appearing sexist.

I was interested in Joy's question about what happens after menopause, where you get some kind of jolt and wake up. I was disappointed that they ignored her question. I've been reading their blogs, but no one addresses this experience. Doctors seem to think the pharmaceutical industry holds the answers, but I reject that. I meditate. I try to be aware of food sensitivities that cause you to wake up more during the night. I've even gone for long periods of time eating only the foods that create the most alkalinity. Nothing works. I have a miserable, physically demanding job. I can't afford to get too little sleep, but I do.

If my neighbors kept their barking dogs inside at night, I'd be sleeping a lot better. However, they've seen fit to turn this neighborhood into a kennel, whether the rest of us like it or not.

Sound like your neighborhood too? Learn what can be done at:

And here's a group of Arizonans who are working on this issue:

Thanks for the great barking dog links... this has been going on for years with our neighbors, who ironically complained about our rooster waking them up too early!

I just love Joy & Arianna. I'm wondering & very curious as to why all the sleep related articles in Huffintonpost's "Living" section. Does anyone know why so many articles on sleep are dominating here?

The ladies of the view made me a believer that powerful women can get along for 60 minutes. Thank You and God continue to bless Whoopi who is spiritually gifted, Joy who lives up to her name, Sherri, Barbara the head honcho, and Elizabeth aka lost and found. Elizabeth and Carrie Prejean are twins seperated at birth. They are true with their conviction of faith, but war against the wrong people. God bless.
