Americans love our benevolent big Pharma Co.- that's why tax payers pay for 80% of the R&D and clinicals and then give Big Pharm exclusive rights so they can charge us anything they want.

OLD NEWS: PHarma primarily sponsored his campaign for Obama's run at the Presidency. This being the fact, how the hell does he get the 'public option' installed (or any quasi-public measure for that matter) against the revenue of his backers. Her's the answer: he DOESN'T..
For he can not bite the hands that fed his coffers. Arainna knows this. This particular segment is a 'fluff piece', and not very illuminating.

LOL, LOL ! Here, I'll extend my hand in friendship to pull you up from that ledge. I'm about as anti-corporate lobbying as you can get, but I'll say this; for the first time in a long time, the people managed to get someone into the White House who didn't have a manufacturing tag that says "made by corporate America". That is not to say that corporate financing does not affect the administration's positions today, only that, as one can see by Obama's time spent talking to people at townhalls demonstrates, the public still has a say in the matter. Don't give up just yet. I mean, if things aren't going "progressively" by election time by all means vote the "blue dog" democrats out of office, and vote in someone new, a Green if need be, at the federal level especially.
guajiro: LOL, LOL ! Here, I'll extend my hand in friendship
PNG Lets be clear here - Pharma gave to Obama as well as huge amounts to the GOP . BUT it was not his primary support- Obama also got millions in donations from his grass roots campaign on the web . If you recall- At first - .No one gave him a chance against Hillary- but his campaign was so well run that he caught up and won 54 % of the vote and huge electoral -even 11 Bush states. . Hen won fair and square- not like McCain - Palen - who ran a campaign of lies - insults- ' not like us' - Arab- Muslim- Pal of terrorist - and sleazy ads.

you should get out of your politicos and the bias to your 'party'. it doesn't really exist as a true representation of the peoples will. Below is the only 'will' these pawns have:
Maybe we need to worry about what goes into our children's mouths before they end up not so old and on "necessary" drugs.
Why aren't we worried about our health as much as we are worried about our sickness?
Maybe, if we were, we would mostly die quickly and drug free.
How about taxing our high calorie, low nutrition foods so high that we change our eating habits. Why don't we do that to pay for the health care of those who consumed those foods? None of us needs foods like that!!!!!!
blindhog: Maybe we need to worry about what goes into our
blind Good points The Right wing in my life time have never done one thing for average folks. just the GOP base of fat cats. Their record speaks for itself
GOP fought medicare - soc sec- min wage laws- GI bill- unemployment comp- etc
28 yrs since 1980- Reagan thru Bush- deregulation that led to crisis -
trillions to the GOP base- while saying NO to a n increase in min wage. and worst off all
lied into Iraq by our born again Christian Pres ?? Bush .

I'm pretty sure PHARMA doesn't want the lobbying process on CSPAN but I think that the President should issue a mandate that ALL lobbying be done in a public setting like CSPAN no editing or opinion, straght observation. Since there is so much lobbying in Washington a priority standard should be set up; say by value of the legislation in tax cost, or some other logical method of weighing the impact on the average American's "life, liberty and our pursuit of happiness"
Then there would not be interference by sensational media, and the public could BE INFORMED, not ENTERTAINED and incited. And then the President would be a hero to the people for giving them tranparency.

PAX The ' old' you elude to has consisted of 29 yrs of GOP reign- since 1980. Reagan 's deregulation thru Bush 2008 . ( except for Clinton ) Many with a GOP congress. THat led us to this meltdown. So we did get rid of the ' old ' in 2008. Now let Obama do the job- the one he was elected for- without constant griping. second guesing .
Isn't it enough that the right wing is crucifying him daily. ?

I would have liked to hear Arianna comment on Blankly's last point about how 'this is how the sausage is made' and that the President 'may have a problem because he said it wasn't going to be this way' regarding the Pharma deal.

I too would've loved to hear Arianna's response to the last comment. I, for one, HATE the assumption that things have to be a certain way. Baloney (not sausage).

22 Obama had - has high hopes - and meant what he said- But he is under tremendous pressure from greedy - evil folks- in DC -lobbyists -etc. from the GOP who are owned by big business - Blue dog traitors - who will do ANYTHING TO GET THEIR WAY. CAN one man - even with the best intentions- do this alone. Obama just said " if I have to be a one term Pres- I want to accomplish health care reform . ' I believe him . Can anyone honestly say Obama is NOT working his

He is one man, but he is, figuratively, the biggest man in the world - bully pulpit and all. Half a loaf don't cut it when it comes to the creation of the largest bureaucratic agency in 40 years. It's got to be done right or not at all, because once it's created, it ain't going away. And we've got enough Federal agencies on life support (no pun intended).

If this deal was cut, lets hear the details. Business for the drug companies depend on their right to keep their patents longer by givings of money to companies that should be able to make the genarics by delaying that process. I hope this isn't the case and that lower drugs prices will come about and that the so called seniors drug program is done away with.

I'm so so glad Arianna has come down on the right side of this issue and is displeased with Obama for doing this, as am I. Lobbyists should be treated as terrorists IMO -- no negotiations. Most sickening words in the English language: business as usual in Washington.

So much for the accusations that HuffPo is a partisan site. I'm so tired of conservatives saying we're all members of the Cult of Obama. We are more than willing to call it like we see it, unlike the Repubs, who are partisan to the core -- even when their talking points fly in the face of all that is reasonable, just, fair, and moral.
imfedup: So much for the accusations that HuffPo is a partisan
I maybe at the loose end of this, but I don't think anyone that's rational disagrees that big Pharma needs a seat at the HeathCare table. I think what is annoying and rigthfully scaring people is these deals are made in secret behind closed doors. I thought Obama was elected partially on the premise he was going to stop all this secret squirrel baloney and make all these deals transparent to the public.

Obama Haters, I can only say this once and I hope you fully comprehend: IT'S NOT PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, IT'S THE SYSTEM! Yes, he certainly made beautiful sounding promises for change and radical retooling of a basically corrupt political machine. I have NO doubt that he wanted to do and STILL wants to do just that. Perhaps he was blinded by old-fashioned idealism and love for his country in the manner of the founding fathers--now his hair is rapidly greying and he is forced to mature at light-speed. He is desperately trying to alter his dreams and plans for his fellow citizens, but this health-care muck and mire is a bitch of a political mammoth that is devouring his attention and spirit day-by-day. Yet he fights on. I say to you: THAT'S the kind of youth and energy we have needed in the whitehouse for some time. Cut him a break, please, support him and realize that his own party members are so bought and sold that he's almost fighting these innumerable demons on his own.
Disciple1: Obama Haters, I can only say this once and I
So many "Progressives" out there are accusing Obama of betrayal, but this Pharma deal is a* Senate* deal that the President is willing to go along with, so long as it leads to healthcare passing. Once the Senate and House have passed healthcare, then the President and his people can come in and negotiate the differences between the two bodies of Congress and try to get the best deal possible.
That's how politics works, and how progress is made... steps towards a goal. Too bad some Progressive ideologues out there seem to have abandoned progress, in the hope of getting every last thing they want, right now.
That simply isn't going to happen, because Blue Dog Dems are getting all sorts of pressure back in their conservative states. Why blame Obama for this? He is doing the very best he can right now under impossible circumstances, and his critics on the left aren't helping. In fact, they may be jeopardizing healthcare for the next twenty years.
Sick people are dying for healthcare. Let's get them something, and improve upon it over the course of this administration, once people are used to federal healthcare and the fearmongerers are forced to moderate their words somewhat.
