Arianna On "Countdown," Discusses How Dem Senators Screwed Homeowners

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Arianna appeared on "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" Friday night to talk about why a number of Senate Democrats voted against legislation aimed at stemming foreclosures Thursday. Arianna read a list of the names of the Democratic Senators who voted against the bill and called on President Obama and Harry Reid to take a firmer stand against the influence of the banks who opposed the legislation.

Some good points Ariana ... but why waste your time on the 23rd rated cable network.....you would have been seen by more if you did a commercial on the prison shows

Hey, Keith Olbermann is my first program of choice to view. Don't knock her appearing on it!

They don't rate networks, they rate individual programs. If you were referring to Countdown the program, they have a significant viewership and are growing.

Tim Johnson (D-SD) was on that list. Shame on him!

And, Robert Byrd, D,WVirginia. Guess his state is in good shape and does not need any protection from the banks.

This is way I said ...let them fail!!!!!!!!!

The root of the issue is the Democrats can pretend they are for bank reform but they deliberately do not put enough pressure and incentives on individual Democrats to make it actually happen. This way they get to pretend they are better than the Republicans and their financial sponsors (Wall Street) still get what they want. If necessary, they will pass watered down legislation with loopholes designed by Wall Street. Those looholes and legislation are designed to look like what the voters want but in reality are a placebo made 90% inneffectual. The Wall Street lobbyists understand the game and only care about the results. They understand the Democrat's (and Republicans) need to posture in front of their constituants. Thus, the politicians who are in real danger of losing a close race are often the ones who are permitted to vote against the powered lites and vote for their voters demands, as long as there are other politicians whos seats are not in jeopardy and thus can ensure Wall Street gets its way.

The House and Senate banking commitees are plum jobs for the politicians because they take so much from Wall Street campaign contributions. However, most of the campaign money must be turned over to the DNC and used to finance other politicians who are not on the banking committee. Thus the party has extreme influence over politicians in their party and it is a Party decision whether or not to klll banking legislation.

Senators collude. They pretty much know what the vote count will be. If they know a bill is going to fail anyway, they will vote for it if it makes them look good.

Who would be the most likely organizations to initiate lawsuits against the banks, the Fed, and against the politicians who voted for de-regulation? Are there any? What is the most promising point of illegality in all these deals, past and present? If Madoff can be convicted, why can't the banks? Is there any feasible way to get any of the bailout money back that's already been paid or promised?

For the future, we need some concrete information on what individual citizens can do to fight back. It's a war against banking industry influence that we must win. They don't have our money from this point forward until we give it to them. What are some smart strategies for derailing them? For handling 401Ks without their greasy fingerprints everywhere. What companies in addition to banks should be boycotted? And if we aren't getting representative government, do we really have to hold up our end of this defunct bargain by paying federal taxes? There have to be ways where we can do more. What are they? Anyone?

The sick irony of this is these anemic banks are getting funded like it's 2009 but are still power playing like it's 2005.

The irony is these Democratic Senators, like Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, (of which I
am a resident)who barely won her re-election in a Republican State and did so because
candidate Obama was on the ticket,to vote against a bill that would not only help home-
owners losing their property due to this economy, but also help people who are still 4 yrs.
later fighting and struggling from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.If anyone in Louisiana can't
see her self interest they have got to be blind and if they vote her back in is STUPID.

Yes her vote saddened me the most too. It takes a selfish short sighted politician to care more about his or her political contributors and their own careers than what's good for their constituants, especially those that need them the most.

I absolutely hate banks. Suggestion: Switch your checking account to Charles Schwab. They have free checking and reimburse for ATM fees. Let the banks sink.

I can remeber ten years ago when Ms. Huffington would come on television and I would be screaming at her to s.t.f.u.. Now I can't get enough of her. Arianna and Katrina vandenHeuvel would make a dynamite team. Any programmers out there listening??

I had never heard of Arianna ten years ago, but have come to realize over the past couple of years that she tells it like it is and is consistently right. She is a voice to be reckoned with and heeded. I hope she keeps doing what she's doing right now.

Like Arlen, Arianna was once Republican.

While the Republicans are still hurting from Arianna's loss, they have yet to feel any significant loss from Specter as we have yet to feel any gain. Hopefully, he will be of help with healthcare reform and not be a total waste of a Senate seat.

Just one note of caution here. While I am greatly disappointed in the Democratic votes, please note that the republic votes were 100% nay with one not voting. So ... while there were 12 Nay votes from the Democrats, that still makes the democratic vote total 45 - 12 with two not voting vs. 0-39 republican.
As we all watch the GOP implode in their effort to purify their party, please remember how the D revival occurred - no litmus test for membership, big tent, and selection of people to run for office based on a fit to the local population. This creates a much less disciplined caucus, but it also makes for a MAJORITY caucus - do we really want to kick twelve Senators out. I sort of like the sound of 60 better than 48. So I am just asking for a wee bit of perspective.
That said - it was a black day!

You make an excellent point. But, in addition to your comment I'd like to add that it really does show just how corrupt our system has become due to financial influence through lobbying.

Agreed. The perspective is appreciative, but it is also a nice reminder of how corrupted our politicians really are. I honestly don't think they give a rip about most americans, nor have a real clue how most of us are just one or two paychecks away from financial disaster.

What good is a majority when it's a false majority? Twelve Republicans are posing as Democrats because it suits their chances of being elected/reelected. The Democratic Party is a brand. The Republican Party is a corporate entity. And neither party represents the people they are elected to represent.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:32 AM on 05/02/2009

Yes - but ... I still prefer 60 to 48 - doesn't work all the time, but I would take any one of the twelve over another Cantor or Kyle, or ... lots of business depends on the number 51, and more on the number 60. What works in NY or CA or IL does not work in MT or ND or LA. So, put the pressure on these folks, but remember what the alternative might be. I definitely prefer the current set up to what we had pre 2006. While we may not get the votes on some stuff, 51+ means we do control the agenda. This bill would never have reached a vote in the 2005 Senate.

I warned after the outcome of November 4th that a majority democrat congress would NOT support the president's progressive agenda, because such an agenda would rock the boat. And as happened when Carter took office, the president's biggest hurdle is his own party.

I think this is an outrage! I am sick of these banks getting tax payers dollars and using it against the taxpayers. I am giving our president a chance . I do agree with some things that he is doing however main street is still being left out in the cold Mr. President and yes he should have used his political capital to help suffering homeowners. This is not change but the same old crap and I am very disappointed.
