HuffPost's Howard Fineman Discusses Donald Trump On MSNBC's 'Hardball' (VIDEO)

Posted: 04/13/11 12:44 AM ET

HuffPost's Howard Fineman appeared Tuesday on MSNBC's 'Hardball' alongside The Washington Post's Eugene Robinson to discuss Donald Trump and the 2012 presidential election.

On the media frenzy surrounding Trump's potential presidential ambitions, Fineman commented, "it's a comment on the weakness of the rest of the field. Donald Trump is a big none-of-the-above with great hair."

Assessing the list of possible GOP presidential contenders, Fineman remarked, "I do think there is a pervasive feeling out there just beneath the surface that this can't be all there is by way of Republican candidates."

Discussing Trump in relation to Sarah Palin, Fineman called Trump, "the Sarah Palin of New York City."

Admit it: Over 1/2 of Americans can't wait to hear "The Donald" tell Obama, "You're fired!" Would be like music to my ears.

Ah, but that's precisely the problem; this field IS the very best that the GOP has to offer.

i think the problem is that despite all the heated rhetoric coming from fox news and the republican party concerning obama, most voters don't feel like he's burning down the country, and i think most voters realize the hand obama was dealt when he became president. i think that's why these potential republican candidates aren't faring too well, and why a guy like trump can come in and get big numbers when republican voters are polled as to who they'll like to see get the republican nomination.

in the end, obama has been an extremely reserved, cautious president, and though if asked people may say they want someone who's more aggressive, it would seem that perhaps it's just the opposite: voters wanted someone who won't rock the boat too much, and obama was that someone.

Good grief, talking about this crap. The primaries of 2012 are several months away. In the media, it's a constant political campaign now.

What a circus....where are the serious GOP candidates ? ? ?

I think Trump and Bachmann are decoys planted by Romney campaign to offset his problems with religious right in GOP and make him look smart and presidential. He is like Fred Thompson in 2008, someone that GOP will plead with to run for POTUS.

We shall see. If gas is $5.00 a gal, and the only thing Obama has to say is "trade in your car and get used to it"...if unemployment is still 9+ (more in the mid-west), if housing is still down...then all bets are off. If you don't think could compete youre all fooling yourselves. You think Obama is popular in the swing states? If he gets the nom and get a Rubio as a VP candidate, he would throw the Dems totally off balance. just watch.

If you claim that the only thing Obama has to say is "trade in your car and get used to it", then I don't see why anyone should read any other tripe you have to post here or anywhere else. You obviously have not bothered to inform yourself.

Now if we can just get everyone off the Trump bandwagon and move on with the real business of things..
09:35 AM on 04/13/2011
When trump realizes he has to get out there and shake hands and speak to the great unwashed, open up his accounts and hide his offshore accounts, suffer through an examination of his past real estate deals....Nah, he'll be gone, he's just having fun right now and ramping up expectations for his stupid show.
04:54 PM on 04/13/2011
Perhaps he should just do the same thing Dems have done in the past? Deny, deny, deny....(RE: John Kerry avoiding Mass. taxes by parking his yacht in RI, etc....here's a partial list http://www.boycottliberalism.com/Scandals.htm...and yes, I get it that Repubs are just as corrupt. Perhaps this is why the appeal of Trump? He's been vigorously vetted in the media for years now, so we get what he's about, and I'd be very surprised if he's been evading taxes (note: it is NOT illegal to have money in an offshore account...I have 2 myself!) Oh, and while Trump is explaining his real estate deals, perhaps Obama can explain his involvement in Acorn and all that voting/donation fraud?

Howard misses the Big Boat. The GOP want to throw this election but can't make it too obvious. Trump is the perfect chump. He is so vain he may never suspect he was suppose to lose.

Trump is going to play this all the way to the bank and ratings. He is NOT...I repeat...HE IS NOT going to run for President...as a Republican nor an Independent...WHY? Well since you want to know....The Donald is never going to fill out all of those papers required to reveal his finances....he just isn't...plus...Trump doesn't want the job...he just wants all of the publicity!!!

interesting..tells you a lot about the country that the Donald can be involved in a discussion about the presidency....best thing he said in the TV interview was "I don't know".
04:58 PM on 04/13/2011
The same country that voted for a junior senator who had just a few months in office under his belt. The same junior senator who exaggerated his work background (he was merely an 'instructor' at UofChicago...not an actual published professor!) and was widely despised for being 'lazy' by his superiors. Yes, a wildly naive country!

The same country, but certainly not the same voters. Trump is yet another fast talking media star with no apparent qualifications or temperment to be a world leader. Say what you will about Obama (you're doing a little exaggerating yourself) he won the Presidency convincingly, mostly on a phenomena called extreme Bush-fatigue. Most people aren't ready to face the real condition of what's left of this country, and can't be blamed for choosing hope over fear. Wildly naive? I'll save that honor for the electorate's relationship with Reagan. Now there was some self-delusion for the books.
