Sam Stein Weighs In On Rupert Murdoch's Fox News Claims (VIDEO)

What's Your Reaction:

Huffington Post political reporter Sam Stein appeared on "The Rachel Maddow Show" Wednesday to discuss Rupert Murdoch's recent comments about Fox News and its competitors.

On Tuesday evening, the News Corp. founder spoke at a forum for the public affairs TV series, The Kalb Report, and turned accusations of a Fox News bias on their head by instead claiming that it was CNN and MSNBC that "tend to be Democrats." During a question and answer session, Murdoch struggled to name a single Democrat who worked for the channel. Unfamiliar with his own network's support for the Tea Party movement, Murdoch said that it would not be ethical for Fox to support Tea Partiers.

Maddow asked Stein to explain how it could be that a man who has made himself the "public and political face" of his media properties, could sound so out of step with his own network.

Stein: "There's obviously the element of plausible deniability, Fox's motto is 'Fair and Balanced' and to admit that you've sort of boosted the Tea Parties would remove that veneer. Secondly, keep in mind, Murdoch is the recent owner of The Wall Street Journal and by all accounts, he's been trying very hard to make that an on-level competitor with The New York Times so perhaps his attention is divided elsewhere. But also this is a man who is very much devoted to ratings. And love it or not, Fox News gets a lot of good ratings. And so maybe he's simply entrusted the enterprise to Roger Ailes under the premise that as long as he can deliver viewers, what's the harm."

Murdoch, Stein explained, is ultimately a businessman, and in the current political climate, it makes good business sense to ride the Tea Party's furor.

We can thank the Republicans for scrapping that. Along with appointing Supreme Court justices who think corporations are "people" entitled to spend as much money as they want in elections.

Rupert Murdoch is a king at playing the field. NewsCorp publishes both the Bible and the Satanic Bible. NewsCorp published the Palin biography and then gave her a job on FOXNews (another NewsCorp holding) which would inevitably boost the sales of the book. Rupert Murdoch has been involved in the cigarette industry, the oil industry, and just about anything else that toxifies people and the planet. He has turned WSJ into FOXNews.

As we see the beginning of photo-realistic CGI, we will also witness the worst propaganda the world community has ever known. I'll bet NewsCorp will be at the forefront with videographically believable lies which will probably incite a civil war. The 'teams' will be as such: peace loving liberals who want the world to be a better place, and gun-toting religious fanatics who want the world to be a whiter place. The latter will happily knaw the skulls of the former. All the reasonable middle-of-the-road people will move to Mexico or Canada.

Actually, only their commentators do and that's because a LOT of people are talking about Fox News! Unlike Fox News, MSNBC actually has JOURNALISTS who do the news and Matthews, Olbermann, Maddow and Schultz will tell you right up front that they're liberals. You just can't compare the two!

A good strategist needs to know what the "enemy" is up to.
And if Fox would quit makin stuff up, Rachel wouldn't have to spend so much time to reveal the truth.

There once was a law in the US that a television station had to be owned by a US citizen. Rupert Murdoch, an Australian and a NEO-conservative, became a naturalized citizen of the United States so that he could buy a television station here. He did NOT become a citizen because of any love or admiration of our country.
If the US wants to start disbanding the disinformation system, we need to start by revoking US citizenship of this man. In civil court, before Congress, I don't care where, but when a person wants something destroyed forever, they destroy the root. Well, where's the root of most of the disinformation? 98% of every source of media I hear on a 24 hour basis is owned by R. Murdoch. How about you?

If you want to control a nation, control its media

If Rupert Murdoch is the end product of free market capitalism then we should all stop digging
and try another direction.

Scripture is the Wisdom of the Ages. Particularly the Beatitudes and this from Mathew 7 which I paraphrase "you will see into their Soul through their words and deeds". Madoff investors and others would not have lost their money had they followed the advice in Scripture.

So it is from that I will say that Rupert Murdoch is the greatest threat that America faces. Use Mathew 7 and the Beatitudes to form your opinion of Rupert Murdoch , don't accept mine.

Rupert Murdoch knows exactly the policy at FOX network because he sets it. But he lies and his minions make excuses for his lies making themselves complicit in the lie. FOX is an extremist, conservative, news network, that tears America apart, when it should stirve to bring Harmony to America. FOX network is a continuous broadcast of the most radical views simply to polarize America, when it should strive to Unite America. Murdoch is Citizen Kane resurrected to a power of 10. Perhaps he has used W.R. Hearst as a template for his life. His power and wealth is so great that he can almost forecast who will or will not be elected. The FCC and the Courts favour his appeals. He is a Juggernaut no government can slow down. America will see his power displayed in Nov if the Voters choose unwisely.

The Faux Noise propaganda machine led by Roger Ailes smear and slander campaigns is an accurate reflection of the Cults of Jesus. To hell with the facts we believe in creationism and that's the way the world is going to be.
Fair and Balanced = Unfair and Imbalanced. Orwell's vision is truly realized in Faux Noise.

Murdoch is a naturalized US citizen. He should have his citizenship revoked for inciting riots with the tea party, plus the rhetoric of his "reporters" He is trying to bring down the government, surely there is a penalty for that? Is it OK if you are filthy rich?

It is my understanding that not only does Murdoch not know who the democrats on Fox news but he cannot name the king of the lab on Fox's TV series Bones.

Does the employment application for news shows have a box to check informing their employer of their political leanings?

If Murdoch were really all about ratings, he would've followed the majority of the American populace, who, if memory serves, recently sent a resounding message to the GOP by electing the country's first African American President in a land slide.

That instead he ratcheted up the reactionary propaganda is the biggest clue that what he's about is political influence among the right wing (aka, fascist) "haves and have mores," pure and simple.

Here is a guy who brought down the Printer's Union in England and yet had a hot line to Tony Blair while he was in power. I wonder how he influenced Blair regarding the Iraq war?

He continues the same hate mongering in the U.S. and still holds onto his citizenship. I think this bum should be kicked out of the country. He is in the forefront of the Corporations trying to bring down this government.

People are getting deported right and left for having committed some minor infraction years ago and heaven forbid you stole a loaf of bread in any other country in the world and tried to enter the U.S., you would be s... out of luck. It ain't going to happen. You will not be given a visa to visit.

This country is now largely owned and completely controlled by corporations. Democracy has failed in America because there is no longer any protection against corporate take-overs of everything from the financial system to the news media. The Supreme Court sealed our fate with the vote to allow corporations to give unlimited amounts of money to political campaigns and politicians.

Most new jobs are generated by very small corporations. But these are increasingly unable to compete with the giants. Every single industry and profession (law, medicine, architecture, etc.) is increasinly owned by fewer and fewer people. Inevitably, this leads to decline and stagnation abd downright manipulation of facts for corporate interests.

Murdoch has been successful in every country by playing to the poorest, dumbest, and most poorly educated people in the country and religious hacks. Roger Ailes is Murdoch's henchmen and honestly doesn't appear to care what sells - in interviews he simply says it's all about the ratings. Roger Ailes is Babba the Hut in every sense from evil to appearance.

This insidious political cancer didn't happen with a single event, but by eating away at the protections in banking, political contributions, lobbying congress, environmental controls, consumer protection, etc. etc. .

People who watch Fox News and don't realize that it is propaganda do not have the mental or educational tools to realize that they are being manipulated to keep the system growing.

Last time I checked 53% of the vote wasn't a landslide. Tell me, how does electing a president because of his race send a "resounding message"? What "resounding message" did Bushs' selection of the first latino Attorney General send? Sounds like race hustling to me...

It's not the percentages that matter. It's the overall intention. We had states voting Blue who had never done so before. We had Democrat majorities elected to all three branches. On top of that, in a post-911 Americam, the elder statesman McCain and young outspoken model Palin were defeated by "a black guy with a muslim name" (quote from Bill Maher). These combined facts constitute a message to the RIght Wing. Whether or not they listened is a matter of opinion.

Personally, however, I get worried when I see FOXNews commentators, post-election, talking about how to "re-brand" the Republican Party. Is the GOP trying to find real leaders or are they just trying to sell something?
01:41 PM on 04/08/2010
I can't believe how jealous msnbc is,just because fox news tells the truth and five times as many people watch them for having an opinion on both sides. They always have a dem and repub on just about every debate and 90% of msnbc's debate has only two or three libs talking to each other.I think it's because they can;t stand the truth so they can sit there and make up things as they go.

Umm... wait a minute. Fox News wouldn't know the truth if it stepped up and clobbered them with a sledge hammer, nor is it at all true that Fox has five times the viewer ship.

Furthermore, not at all true that they air all sides of a story.

You seem a little confused about who "makes up things as they go"
