ST. LOUIS — A district executive says St. Louis public schools will seek at least $4.5 million in outside funds to correct potential lead paint hazards at 27 elementary schools.

Rick Sullivan told The Associated Press on Thursday that a board appointed last year to oversee the troubled school district became aware of the problem and its significance in the last two months. Sullivan is the chief executive officer of the special administrative board.

He says the district is pursuing the funds for a permanent solution to the lead problem. He couldn't say where the money might come from or how long it would take to correct potential hazards once the funding is found.

In the meantime, Sullivan says, city inspectors and a consultant are coming up with immediate steps for addressing the problem.
