NY county fined $12,000 after closet falls on nun
RAMAPO, N.Y. — A county just north of New York City has been fined $12,000 for unsafe conditions at one of its nursing homes after a closet fell on a nun and killed her.
The Department of Health says Rockland County must pay the state $10,000 for failing to secure a 200-pound freestanding closet that toppled over and crushed Sister Mary Daniel at the Summit Park Hospital and Nursing Care Center last year. It must pay $2,000 for failing to take action after two similar incidents before the 90-year-old nun's death.
The county executive says Rockland has agreed to the penalty and is working to improve safety at the nursing home.
The nun's family has filed notice of intent to sue the county.
