Calif. offices to be closed 2 Fridays each month
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's office has announced that most state agencies will be closed on the first and third Fridays of each month.
The administration announced Friday that the schedule would begin in February. The governor mandated the furloughs in a December executive order to help the state close a projected $42 billion deficit over the next 18 months.
Department of Personnel Administration spokeswoman Lynelle Jolley says prisons, hospitals, parks and other agencies that generate money for the state will be exempted from the Friday schedule. Employees at those agencies will be furloughed on a rotating schedule.
Schwarzenegger says the furloughs will save the state about $1.3 billion through June 2010.
