Report: GM laying off 797 in Brazil
SAO PAULO, Brazil — A top General Motors official in Brazil says the company is laying off 797 temporary workers.
The privately run Agencia Estado news agency quotes GM's vice president of its Brazil operations as saying workers at a factory in Sao Paulo state will be let go.
Of those workers at the Sao Jose dos Campos plant, more than 740 will be fired before their contracts are up.
Under Brazilian law, that leaves the company open to be fined 50 percent of the salary of each of those workers.
After hours calls to the Brazil unit of General Motors Corp. were not immediately returned.
Vice President Jose Carlos Pinheiro Neto says further layoffs might occur, depending upon Brazil's auto market.
