JACKSON, Miss. — Cleveland Donald Jr., the second black graduate of the University of Mississippi, has died at age 65.

His brother, retired Army Maj. Gen. James Donald, said Donald died Jan. 26 of natural causes at his home in New Milford, Conn. Donald Jr. preached equality and reconciliation during his academic career.

He attended Tougaloo College, then enrolled at Ole Miss in 1964 and graduated in 1966 with a history degree. Donald entered the school under a federal protection order. James Meredith was the first black to enroll in 1962 and the first to graduate.

In 1978, Donald helped establish a black studies program at Ole Miss. He was a professor at universities in Texas, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
