NEWARK, N.J — New Jersey's largest city is preparing to cut the ribbon on the first large-scale food market to open in a long time.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker is expected to officially open the Food Depot Supermarket on Tuesday. It's located in a heavily traveled area a few blocks from Route 280.

City officials say it's the first major supermarket to open in the city in decades and will give Newark residents high quality, affordable food options they don't currently have.

The 30,000-square-foot store has cost $8 million to build and has created 100 jobs. About $2 million came via a loan from the city through its Brick City Development Corp.

Owners Orfilio Chaviano and Nick Gonzalez III both have roots in Newark though working in family grocery stores.
