WASHINGTON — The United States says the decision of Myanmar's opposition party to take up its parliamentary seats despite a dispute over the oath of office is a hopeful sign it can work with the military-run government there.

Aung San Suu Kyi (ahng sahn soo chee) said she and other lawmakers who won seats in April 1 special elections will attend the parliament for the first time Wednesday and will take the oath although they object to swearing to "safeguard" the constitution. That charter was drafted under military rule and ensures the army inordinate power.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner told a news briefing Tuesday the U.S. hopes the two sides can work together to "build on the democratic progress that has been made."
