BEIJING — Family members say the nephew of a high-profile legal activist is being tried in China on charges that he assaulted officials who were looking for his uncle.

Chen Guangcheng escaped from house arrest earlier this year, fleeing to the U.S. Embassy and setting off a diplomatic tussle between Beijing and Washington. The activist, who is blind, now lives in New York.

Chen's brother says the family has been informed that the nephew, Chen Kegui, will stand trial Friday at a court in the northeastern county of Yinan.

Chen Kegui has been detained since May, accused of attacking local officials with a knife after his uncle fled. The family says he acted in self-defense after the officials stormed into his house and assaulted his parents.
