Stocks advanced on Wall Street Tuesday, pushing the Standard and Poor's 500 index to its highest close in two months, on optimism that lawmakers are closing in on a budget deal that will stop the U.S. from going over the "fiscal cliff" at the start of next year.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 115.57 points, or 0.9 percent, to 13,350.96
The Standard and Poor's 500 index rose 16.43 points, 1.2 percent, to 1,446.79.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 43.93 points, or 1.5 percent, to 3,054.53.
For the week:
The Dow is up 215.95 points, or 1.6 percent.
The S&P500 is up 33.21 points, or 2.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 83.20 points, or 2.8 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,133.40 points, or 9.3 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 189.19 points, or 15 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 449.38 points, or 17.3 percent.
