GAUHATI, India — Police say suspected rebels have killed one Indian paramilitary soldier and wounded three others with an improvised explosive device near the northeastern border with Myanmar.

Manipur state police chief Joykumar Singh says the explosion occurred Friday near Moreh, a trading town on the India-Myanmar border about 650 kilometers (405 miles) south of Gauhati, the Assam state capital.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast. More than a dozen separatist groups are active in Manipur state and often stage hit-and-run attacks.

The rebels claim the local population is ignored by the federal government in New Delhi. Most locals are ethnically closer to groups in Myanmar and China than to the rest of India.
