GEORGETOWN, Guyana — An opposition-controlled Parliament in Guyana has voted down a bill aimed at curbing weapon smuggling in the South American country.

The bill would have made it illegal to carry the components of a disassembled gun. It was introduced by National Security Minister Clement Rohee.

Legislators with the Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change said they voted against the bill late Thursday because they had previously approved a no-confidence motion against Rohee.

President Donald Ramotar defended Rohee as one of his best ministers.
