NEW YORK — New York University says blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng will be leaving his position at the school at the end of this month.
A university spokesman confirmed the departure Thursday, saying the school last year had said the post would not be indefinite. Chen has been a special student at the university's U.S.-Asia Law Institute.
Chen made international headlines in April 2012 when he escaped from house arrest in China and sought refuge in the U.S. embassy in Beijing. He had angered local Chinese officials by documenting complaints about forced abortions. The extrajudicial house arrest followed his release from prison.
A spokesman for New York-based Fordham University says Chen is in negotiations with the law school's Leitner Center.
