Stocks fell on Monday after a sell-off in China jolted U.S. investors. The losses were worse in the morning. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 248 points before recovering somewhat. All 10 sectors in the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell, led by financial stocks. With four trading days left in the quarter, the indexes were clinging to modest gains.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 139.84 points, or 0.9 percent, to close at 14,659.56.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 19.34 points, or 1.2 percent, to 1,573.09.

The Nasdaq composite fell 36.49 points, or 1.1 percent, to 3,320.76.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 1,555.42 points, or 11.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 146.90 points, or 10.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 301.25 points, or 10 percent.
