BOSTON — A man arrested outside Secretary of State John Kerry's Boston home with what police say was a pellet gun in his car is being held on unrelated charges.

State Department security officers spotted the man parked in a no-parking zone Sunday afternoon and called police.

Police say the man, 29-year-old Vladimir Romanov of Boston, told security officers he was taking pictures to show a friend. When asked to move his vehicle, he said he'd been drinking.

Kerry spokesman Glen Johnson said the man was taking pictures of a window in Kerry's house. Kerry, a former U.S. senator from Massachusetts, was not home.

Romanov was arraigned Monday. A municipal court judge revoked Romanov's bail on an unrelated assault with a dangerous weapon charge and ordered him held for allegedly violating the terms of his probation on an earlier drunken driving case.

Boston Police officials said they responded at about 4 p.m. Sunday to a request for assistance from members of the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service who said they spotted a man taking several pictures of the windows of Kerry's home.

Police said the man appeared unsteady on his feet with smell of alcohol on his breath and that an open alcohol container was seen in his car.

When asked to produce identification the man said, "I cannot do that at this point," according to police, who arrested the man later identified as Romanov on a charge of drinking in public.

In Romanov's car, police said they found a pellet gun clearly visible, along with three cellphones, a GPS navigation system, a black canvas bag containing several carbon dioxide cartridges and an open container of alcohol.

Romanov is due back in court Sept. 25.

Kerry's wife Teresa Heinz Kerry is in a rehabilitation hospital in Boston after suffering from a seizure at the couple's home in Nantucket.
