The Dow Jones industrial average edged lower on Wednesday after wavering in response to the Federal Reserve's latest assessment of the U.S. economy. The index still closed out July with its best monthly gain since January.

The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 21.05 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 15,499.54.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 0.23 of a point, or 0.01 percent, to 1,685.73.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 9.90 points, or 0.3 percent, to 3,626.37.

For the week:

The Dow is down 59.29 points, or 0.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 5.92 points, or 0.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 13.21 points, or 0.4 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 2,395.40 points, or 18.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 259.54 points, or 18.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 606.86 points, or 20.1 percent.
