The Dow Jones industrial average gained for the first day in six after the government reported that unemployment claims fell close to their lowest level in six years. Encouraging news from some big retailers also helped boost the stock market.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 55.04 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 15,328.30.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 5.9 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,698.67.

The Nasdaq composite advanced 26.4 points, or 0.7 percent, to 3,787.43.

For the week so far:

The Dow is down 122.79 points, or 0.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 11.24 points, or 0.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 12.70 points, or 0.4 percent

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 2,224.16 points, or 17 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 272.48 points, or 19 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 767.92 points, or 25 percent.
