ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — London Bridge rallied on the outside in the stretch to win the $500,000 Marathon by a length, extending Mike Smith's record for most Breeders' Cup victories among jockeys to 18.

The 3-year-old colt ran 1¾ miles in 2:58.32 at Santa Anita on Friday, the opening day of the 14-race world championships.

London Bridge paid $20, $10.20 and $6.40 in becoming the first New York-bred to win a Breeders' Cup race.

Smith, a 48-year-old Hall of Famer, also holds the record for most money won among riders at the 30-year-old event, with more than $23 million.

Blueskiesnrainbows returned $9 and $6.20, and Worldly was another neck back in third and paid $4.80 to show.

Ever Rider was eased by jockey Gary Stevens approaching the stretch turn. The on-call veterinarian said the 5-year-old gelding got tired and was walking back to the barn.
