PENNSVILLE, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey police chief says the father of the young man suspected of carrying out a fatal shooting at Los Angeles International Airport called around the time of the attack to report that his son had sent a suicidal text message and he needed to find him.

Pennsville Police Chief Allen Cummings said the local man reported Friday that his son Paul Ciancia (see-AHN'-see-uh) sent the text to a sibling. The chief called Los Angeles police and they checked Ciancia's apartment, where roommates said they saw him Thursday and he was fine.

It wasn't clear if the Los Angeles police visited before or after the shooting.

A security officer was killed in the attack and several people were wounded. Ciancia was injured in a shootout and taken into custody.
