RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — State-run media in Saudi Arabia say a court has convicted a man of being an al-Qaida operative and plotting the assassination of senior state officials, and sentenced him to 16 years in prison.

The official Saudi Press Agency says the man, whose name was not released, acquired an Iraqi passport with the aim of recruiting other fighters and collecting money for terrorist acts in Saudi Arabia.

Other state-linked media reported the man had plotted to kill the kingdom's highest cleric, the grand mufti.

The official news agency reported late Tuesday that the man was also sentenced to 40 lashes and ordered to seek psychological treatment at the kingdom's Prince Mohammed bin Nayef rehabilitation center for Islamic militants.
