Stocks rose for the first time in four days Tuesday as investors' jitters about emerging markets faded. Earnings gains from big companies including Pfizer, Comcast and D.R. Horton helped lift stock indexes.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 90.68 points, or 0.6 percent, to close at 15,928.56.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 10.94 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,792.50.

The Nasdaq composite rose 14.35 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,097.96.

For the week:

The Dow is up 49.45 points, or 0.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 2.21 points, or 0.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 30.21 points, or 0.7 percent

For the year so far:

The Dow is down 648.10 points, or 3.9 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 55.86 points, or 3 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 78.63 points, or 1.9 percent.
