Stocks rose sharply Thursday, with large parts of the market erasing Wednesday's losses, as investors cheered a batch of strong earnings from Facebook and Visa as well as data showing the U.S. economy grew at a robust annual rate of 3.2 percent in the fourth quarter.

Investors also got a respite from the recent turmoil in overseas markets, particularly in Turkey and Argentina.

On Wednesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 109.82 points, or 0.7 percent, to 15,848.61.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 19.99 points, or 1.1 percent, to close at 1,794.19.

The Nasdaq composite rose 71.69 points, or 1.8 percent, to 4,123.13.

For the week:

The Dow is down 30.50 points, or 0.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 3.90 points, or 0.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 5.05 points, or 0.1 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is down 728.05 points, or 4.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 54.17 points, or 2.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 53.46 points, or 1.3 percent.
