ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's main opposition party says it is contesting local election results in the capital Ankara, where its candidate appears to have narrowly lost to the ruling party.

The Republican People's Party filed for a recount of several ballot boxes on Tuesday, claiming discrepancies between votes registered with the election board and the party's own ballot counts.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AKP party swept Sunday's elections, winning some 45 percent of the votes, according to unofficial results. The AKP candidate for Ankara received 44.7 percent while the opposition got 43.8 percent.

Hundreds of people gathered outside electoral board building in Ankara denouncing alleged fraud.

The candidate for Istanbul, also alleging irregularities, has called for a recount there although the AKP won by a large margin.
