HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The family of a teenage girl stabbed to death inside her Connecticut high school says they are shocked and devastated by the attack.
Sixteen-year-old Maren Sanchez was stabbed Friday morning at Jonathan Law High School in Milford. Another student, a 16-year-old boy, was taken into custody.
Edward Kovac, a cousin of Sanchez, read a statement from the family describing Maren as a "bright light full of hopes and dreams."
He said more needs to be done to ensure young people are protected from attacks at school.
Police are investigating whether the boy attacked her because she turned down an invitation to be his prom date. Police say his name isn't being released because of juvenile offender laws.
