Saudi Arabia: Sports Minister Confirms Women's Exclusion

Posted: 04/05/2012 6:31 pm

Time Running Out for IOC to Roll Back Saudi Discrimination

(Beirut) – The Saudi sports minister and head of the Saudi National Olympic Committee confirmed on April 4, 2012, that Saudi Arabia will not support women in practicing sports. Prince Nawwaf al-Faisal said: “Female sports activity has not existed [in the kingdom] and there is no move thereto in this regard.”

“At present, we are not embracing any female Saudi participation in the Olympics or other international championships,” Prince Nawwaf continued.

“If the International Olympic Committee was looking for an official affirmation of Saudi discrimination against women in sports, the minister in charge just gave it,” said Christoph Wilcke, senior Middle East researcher at Human Rights Watch. “It is impossible to square Saudi discrimination against women with the noble values of the Olympic Charter.”

Speaking at a press conference in Jeddah that concluded a meeting of Arab youth and sports ministers, the prince claimed that the demand for women’s participation in the Olympics and other international championships came from Saudi women living abroad, and that his organizations would not officially support that demand, but would instead cooperate with those women to ensure their participation “occurred in the appropriate framework and comported with Islamic law.” The prince said he was in constant contact with the Saudi mufti and religious scholars to insure nothing “infringed upon the Muslim woman.”

In a February report, “’Steps of the Devil’: Denial of Women's and Girls' Rights to Sport in Saudi Arabia,” Human Rights Watch documented the systematic discrimination against women in sports in Saudi Arabia, including their exclusion from the 153 sports clubs regulated by Nawwaf’s ministry, the Saudi National Olympic Committee (NOC), and the 29 national sporting federations, which are also overseen by Nawwaf in his capacity as head of the NOC.

Human Rights Watch urged the IOC to put Saudi discrimination against women in sport on the agenda of its next executive board meeting in Quebec on May 23.

“The time is running out for hope that dialogue with Saudi authorities will lead to a change in discriminatory policies,” Wilcke said. “It is clear that a symbolic participation in the London 2012 games by Saudi women athletes does not mean an end to the systematic discrimination against women practicing sports in Saudi Arabia and in international competitions.”

Why can't, why doesn't the Olympic Committee prohibit Saudi from participating in the Olympics since they discriminate against half their population participating in sports? If they don't it is a travesty.

I read some of the disgusting and racist comments and some of them have stupid stories about the Saudi killing people for theft and beating their wife’s, and I will direct my comment to people who describe themselves as open minded!; I know Saudi Arabia better than any of you, and I can’t tell you how much your comments are further from reality, Saudi women other than the black cover you see, Driving a car to work, and participating in the Olympics, they can do as much maybe more than a woman in western world, and yes they have sports clubs for women,
Raping a woman is a capital crime, if you beat your woman she can take you to court, they don’t have prostitutes selling their body for money, a woman can cut any (men) waiting list and everyone will respect that, yes there are bad apples as in any country but you can’t generalize,
We have to respect the others way of life, otherwise we are the one with a problem, “do we all have to eat lobster?” Larry David

I was told by a Muslim woman that if her husband does not spend enough of his paycheck on the household she can take him to court, and win.  Is this true?

Saudi courts under religious rule are executing people for theft. As I type this they are awaiting beheading. In Saudi Arabia, you can be beheaded because you've converted to Christianity. And you write an article about women in SPORTS?

While I was there they only cut off your right hand for theft, making you a social outcast as no one would let you reach into the meal dish with the same hand you wiped your butt with. Maybe executions are for repeat offenders.

Theft is punished by cutting off the hand.... Pls get informed.

Bookmakers are giving odds on favorite that the Saudis will sweep the medals field in wife beating at the London Olympics later this year. The only completion is coming from Afghanistan and Pakistan and Hillary says she doesn't care who wins because they all allies of ours in the fight against terrorism

That wasn't even funny.... neither is this:

In 2005, 1,181 women were murdered by an intimate partner.1

According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, women experience about 4.8 million intimate partner-related physical assaults and rapes every year.4 Less than 20 percent of battered women sought medical treatment following an injury.5

232,960 women in the U.S. were raped or sexually assaulted in 2006. That's more than 600 women every day.6

The Justice Department estimates that one in five women will experience rape or attempted rape during their college years, and that less than five percent of these rapes will be reported.10

Republicans in America would be considered far left liberals in the Islamic world. Nice try shifting blame and changing the subject. Next time at least be funny or clever.

in 1896, there were no women at all in the Olympics. Not until 1920 did women get the vote in America. Saudi Arabia is moving slower than we are, but they started from a position behind us. At least they are moving in the right direction.

Here is my favorite quote from the article: ” The prince said he was in constant contact with the Saudi mufti and religious scholars to insure nothing “infringed upon the Muslim woman.”".

It sounds an awful lot like the sausage fest the the Republican Party held to determine access to birth control for women. Men determining what is in the best interest of women is so last century.

Saudi royals specialize in hypocrisy, many many stories about the young ones and their misbehavior around the world and at home, so much for islamic law.

I notice he didn't say ,"infringe on the RIGHTS of the Muslim woman".
Probably because in their medieval kingdom those women HAVE no rights to infringe upon. They seem to want them locked away where no one and nothing can touch them. I'm surprised more of them aren't using the burning bed scenario.
