Loretta Lux Sasha and Ruby 1, 2008 Ilfochrome Print © Loretta Lux, Courtesy Yossi Milo Gallery, New York In images such as Sasha and Ruby 1 (2008), the artist explores the double portrait, in which the relationship between two self-aware children is characterized by detachment and alienation. Ms. Lux’s images of children also explore the discovery of the self, or the development of a concept of one’s self. “We are radically alone and forced to choose our own path and create our own authentic life, but the self is a mystery,” says Lux.

Title: MONDAY NIGHT (or Black Body Radiation, No. 1) Media: Video still Year: 2012 In the age of smart phones I am challenged towards more layered forms of performance documentation. Jasper Johns is an inspiration: “Do something, do something to that, and then do something to that.” Plus, I get to make a commentary on the black body using a classic reference. Oh, and there’s popping, locking and dropping.

The Slap, 2012, oil and enamel on canvas, 24
The Slap, 2012, oil and enamel on canvas, 24" x 20". Based on a film still from an early John Cassavetes film. I was taken with the woman’s angry gesture of slapping the man, which I echoed with the formal designs of the battling couple’s outfits. I was interested in the intensity of the figure’s emotions, a quality foregrounded by the black background.
