This is the initial project in the Untitled (Street Performances) series, a group of actions in landmark urban locations that rupture and critique social hierarchies and boundaries of restricted public space while referencing protest actions. The actions are interstitial in that they do not reinforce dichotomies of control and anarchism but open other views, alternative perspectives of gendered behavior, public and private space, bodily presence, security and freedom of movement. The action highlights systemic hierarchies and uses public intervention as political gesture. Informed viewers engage passerby in conversation about their reactions to the performance and discuss the meanings and potential motivations of such an action.
