Military Misconduct: Sheep-beating Video Surfaces

Posted: 01/13/12 03:48 PM ET

Years ago, during World War I, British and German soldiers did something that horrified their superiors: they called an unauthorized truce on Christmas Day in 1914, climbing out of their trenches and sharing cigarettes, rations, family photographs, jokes and songs with their mortal enemies, the men they would later attempt to shoot to kill. These soldiers realized that their counterparts, like themselves, either believed in their country's mission or were there because they had been sent there and there was nothing they could do but fight each other.

Of course there were atrocities in that war, as in all wars, and people were raped, beaten and abused, but that shining moment on the Western Front stands out as soldiers in opposing armies acknowledged their shared feelings of being desperately cold, lonely and a long way from home on Christmas Day.

We are all familiar with accounts of My Lai, photographs from Abu Ghraib, and now videotape of soldiers urinating on the dead. But there are other victims who also do not deserve what is done to them at the hands of war bullies. Animals are easy victims, and much has been written about how human enemies are easier to kill if they are called "animals," "rats," "dogs" and other such names.

Last year, a scandalous video emerged of a U.S. marine throwing a puppy off a cliff. Now there is this video of a soldier repeatedly beating a sheep with a baseball bat to the whoops and laughter of other soldiers who are looking on. I would say "beating to death" because that is probably what happened, but we do not know the upshot. We only know, from watching the video and seeing the mood of the soldiers -- and what appears to be a local lad who arrived with the animal -- that the sheep could only have come to a very nasty end. He or she tries to rise several times but the soldier continues to thwack away amid the laughter.

PETA did what it always does when someone blows the whistle on these incidents of gratuitous cruelty: We wrote to Secretary of the Army John McHugh [PDF] and then, when no answer was forthcoming, to other high-ranking officers, including Chief of Public Affairs General Stephen Lanza and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command David E. Quantock. No one -- not PETA and not the thousands of people who have seen this video and are rightly disturbed by it -- has received any acknowledgment, not even a single comforting word, that an investigation has been started.

Military psychologists and psychiatrists are aware, as are all psychologists and psychiatrists, that gratuitous cruelty to animals, especially when it gives pleasure to the perpetrator, is an indicator of other anti-social problems that need to be taken most seriously. Juveniles who decapitate neighborhood cats or hang the family dog from a tree are almost guaranteed to go on to other violent crimes if they are not stopped and dealt with. All the "school shooters" have a history of cruelty to animals, as does every known serial killer from Son of Sam to Jeffrey Dahmer. Worrying about what these soldiers will do to other human beings is a valid concern, but it is enough to worry about why they feel it acceptable or funny to torture any living beings who cannot defend themselves -- in this case, one who is unarmed, small, docile, out of his or her environment, the holder of no political views or enmity, and not threatening them in any way. In fact, it's hard to find a less threatening being than a sheep.

It is also worrying not to hear that something is being done about such behavior even if it is unlikely to disrupt talks with the Taliban and risk the lives of our other serving troops, which is the fear that the video of the urinating soldiers has raised.

Ms. Clinton, Gen. Lanza, Gen. Quantock and Sec. McHugh: May the American public hear from you that the United States condemns cruelty to all vulnerable beings by its own and that an investigation is in the works?

we live in a world
so sad and tragic
a gift given to us
by the creator of
magic
but in cruelty
man torments
and kills
to those who care
a bitter pill
all my decades
living here
are covered with sorrow
and bathed in tears:(

This is disgusting. I would love to take a bat to that person, plain and simple. Doubt he would think it's so funny.

The person swinging the bat should be identified, arrested and prosecuted. There is no reason for that type of action, especially commiting it in such a gleeful manner. The soldiers who were cheering should be busted down and reprimanded.

Any woman who views this video and sees their husband or boyfriend happily looking on, should think seriously whether they want the person around their children or pets. If a person finds joy in the beating of a defenseless and non agressive animal what will that person do to you or your children or loved ones some day. It doesn't matter that it is "just an animal" as some might respond, or that they are venting from stress. This is disgusting!

The army needs to seriously look at this. If soldiers cannot control themselves, their morals and common sense when not in combat, what will they do in combat? These are not soldiers thay are cowards. Maybe that's why so many die because they do not take what is happening seriously and they do not value life themselves.

This is NOT what sheep are for! But American GI's seem not to care about the lives of any living creature that must be begging for such abuse.

I am so angry about the American force's.and the way that they behave. They lack warmth and respect and they showed that when they urinated on the bodies of the dead taliban and I am not sure whether they were even dragged over the coals for that incident. Again there was the incident about the American flag which carried part american and part german on it. Why would they do such a thing, was it to show the world that they were the best? I would imagine that spending years in a country fighting the enemy it may get anybody down, but at the same time it could also bring out the animal in them.

As a soldier from the late seventies. I still remember the atrocities from Vietnam broadcast on national television. I was assigned to a Classified Military Mission in my Army time. I , however, was outraged by the video of the beating of a sheep by these soldiers and their obvious enjoyment in the pain this poor creature endured.

You could hear the metal baseball bat bouncing off the sheep's skull, until it moved no more. In GOD's eyes, all of his creatures are to be treated with dignity and love. Where is the love that GOD placed in all human beings, in these soldiers? Evidentally, they chose to forget that love and instead find the horror and violence that Satan chose to put into their minds.

The war indeed is terrible over there, but we hold our sympathy for the civilians and those poor animals who rely on our soldiers to take care of them and keep them from harm. What will these soldiers do next, use a baby for a beating object. The bible says that God created all creatures great and small. This sheep was one of the smallest of God's creatures and in it's simple mind, must not have understood why men, who resembled his owner, would beat him to death for enjoyment. All animals have a certain level of intelligence and this poor creatures last thought must have been "Why me Father?"

Stuff happens when young guys get together in testosterone fueled environments. They egg each other on and sometimes do things they might regret later
11:07 AM on 01/20/2012
stuff happens??!! would you say that if it was your sheep, dog, cat or maybe your child? how about rape, is that "stuff" too?? cruelty is cruelty. this animal is one of gods creatures and we are to steward gods earth and inhabitants not treat them this way for fun. i know a soldier is a trained killer but this is wrong. i want an answer from our government.

Sorry socal55 but "boys will be boys" just does not cut it with this. It was an act of deliberate cruelty and it should be dealt with by those in command. Part of being a soldier is to have conduct becoming and representing the US military. I hardly think this was honorable. I am the daughter of a career Army veteran and the wife of a Marine. This incident needs to be investigated and the ones that did this, and thought it hilarious should be reprimanded. The "boys will be boys" wink wink attitude makes me ill.
04:25 PM on 01/26/2012
I totally agree with you Cat! "Boys will be boys" attitude is bullshit.
08:32 PM on 01/17/2012
It's time retribution came into effect. There is no reason for these events to be occurring, especially not to innocent animals. I highly doubt anything is being "investigated". Why are soldiers held in such high regard when nonsense like this is happening? Shame on the U.S. army and any other soldier involved with this incident and any other. I hope they are dishonorably discharged and go on to lead a miserable life.
10:59 AM on 01/19/2012
I totally agree!!

I'm so sick of excuses for bad behavior. Seriously!!! God gave us a brain that is supposed to be superior to other animal species. We know the differences between right and wrong. And when is it ever "ok" to intentionally cause harm to another living thing? There is a diminishing respect for the right to life......
06:31 PM on 01/17/2012
This is the response from US central Command this has been their only response even after being bombarded with messages.
U.S. Central Command: ISAF has initiated a full investigation into the incident. We are checking on the status of this investigation with ISAF. In the meantime, please understand our obligation, as representatives of U.S. Central Command, to respect the time-hon...ored process we have in place to investigate such incidents properly. We realize that process may seem slow to those who believe they have seen enough to render a judgment. However, our responsibility at this early stage is to refrain from potentially prejudicial commentary that could interfere with the investigation.

More guys who've been somewhere very bad too long. Still, war is hell and I don't know if it's military conduct to be beating up man or animal. Where is the leadership on this?

After watching the video, I suspect that this may have more to do with stupidity than with deliberate brutality. Of course I could be wrong, but it seems to me that the intent was to turn a lamb into barbecue. Unfortunately for the lamb, the person who took on the task of killing it didn't have a clue. I mean, come on. This is an animal that fights by butting heads. They can bang heads with an opponent for days because evolution provided them with a large sinus cavity to protect their brain from the full force of such blows. You can't kill such an animal by whacking it on the forehead with an aluminum baseball bat. I just hope it wasn't too long before someone in that unit remembered they had access to guns and put that poor lamb out of its misery.
06:59 PM on 01/17/2012
Excuses why do we always have to have excuses. Brutality to an animal is just that and nothing more. I seriously doubt that these ?humans? were even thinking of butchering for food. We train our children to be killers and then expect them not to behave as such. We train them to kill and send them off to fight in wars where we do not belong. When they return home we expect them to move right back into life without being deprogrammed. Blame the war mongers and the way they brainwash our young people. If you train a dog to bite do you really expect him not to bite?

Why do you "seriously doubt" that these people (yes, they are humans) were "even thinking about butchering for food"? What we see in the film is a boy delivering a lamb to a military unit. It's likely that the unit purchased the lamb from the boy's father. Also, notice that all the blows are to the head. If the intent was cruelty and nothing more, why limit the blows to just the head?

Was this brutal? Of course. Was brutality the intent? Maybe, but I don't think so. And intent does make a difference.
