It's an odd world when gay people in California lose the right to marry but those who snuck in ahead get to stay married. When it is legal in our state to use pot for medical purposes but illegal at the same time. When in this very state Adam Lambert loses American Idol and Gilles Marini loses Dancing with the Stars. Sometimes I just shake my head and wonder, WTF?
I have to admit, I like American Idol, and I even like Simon Cowell. This season was a little dull for me because I felt like Adam was in such another league that it seemed like the only contest was watching who got kicked off next until Adam won. Adam has that thing where I don't feel Kris, or any of the others did. That thing has been called 'the X factor,' 'the Wow factor,' that certain je ne sais quoi. Adam was amazing to watch and even if you weren't a fan, you had to admit he was interesting, different and talented. He deserved to win and I believe will have the best career. Now with all the hubbub over the voting, maybe they will hand it to him anyway. I guess it doesn't much matter, for once (OK maybe a couple of times) Idol found talent. WTF?
Then there is Gilles Marini, best known as the naked guy from the Sex and The City movie. Gilles was partnered with Cheryl Burke this season on Dancing with The Stars. Cheryl is one of the best dancers, and choreographers, I have ever seen. When I first heard that Gilles was going to be on dancing I wondered how he would do. I guess I was sort of expecting the Denise Richards thing from him. Instead, he was an amazing dancer who got better and better each week. His chemistry with Cheryl was intense and watching them dance was a beautiful thing.
Gilles lost to Shawn Johnson, the Olympic gymnast. Shawn was a good dancer, cute, bubbly, 17 years old and technically correct but she didn't have that thing. You know 'the Wow factor,' 'the X factor' or that certain je ne sais quoi. Gilles did and deserved to win. Gilles also seemed like a really nice person, so you wanted him to win. He is like the foreign version of George Clooney. Gorgeous, sexy, funny and nice all at the same time. So WTF?
So as Gilles said, "It's all good." I think in terms of what Dancing will do for his career and Idol will do for Adam's, he is absolutely right. But the gay marriage thing, WTF?

I found that some of my co-workers seemed actually afraid of both of these guys' sexuality...based on some of their comments, which were more revealing than they realized. This would be understandable if they were in high school or college, but no...these are women in their late 20s to early 50s. I remember feeling a bit like that when I was in my teens...the sexy guy on campus made your knees knock so you went out with the class clown instead. But...it's amazing that people in their 30s, 40s, etc. could actually be threatened by guys who are so overtly hot. Oh well, glad I'm over that problem! Wink, wink...
sexy guys on my campus were the class clowns!
Gilles and Cheryl were such a perfect pair and Gilles... Gilles is like the love child of Antonio Banderes and George Clooney.
WTF - you are absolutely right. Gilles and Cheryl brought the ART back into the dance which is remarkable for American television. I was glued to the show this season only because I wanted to watch what they would bring. Shawn won the Little Miss Sunshine contest that most people expect from network shows. I think the viewing experience provided by Gilles and Cheryl was an aberration - the kind of expression we might find on pbs but not usually on commodity tv.
Gilles is a great dancer and Cheryl brought out the best in him, except for the Freestyle. What was she thinking - picking a woman's dance for the Freestyle? The star should be highlighted, not the pro. Mark choreographed a Freestyle that not only showcased Shawn's gymnast credentials, but what she had learned about ballroom dancing. Her Freestyle did have the lifts expected in Freestyles, but also elements of ballroom dance and Shawn executed perfectly. Gilles' Freestyle was more about Cheryl and did not showcase his acting and dancing abilities - as Bruno and Carrie Ann pointed out, "something was lacking".
I have to agree with you upstateSC about Gilles's freestyle, I keep thinking that the salsa he presented the week before was better than the final. However, except for a couple of good moves, I thought that Shawn and Mark's dance was inexplicable - those masks? really? Overall, Mark's amazing dancing skills overperformed and overshadowed Shawn altogether. You only wanted to watch Mark! In my opinion, Gilles and Cheryl created some very special memorable performances that would've been impossible to repeat every single week. At those times when they were poignant, exhilarating, and moving, the experience of dance was more than TV entertainment. I never expected this from DWTS.
I agree Irene, they both deserved to win! I'm a huge fan of them both.
