Why Obama Should Thank The New Yorker

I realize that a lot of you will deem me a pinhead (to use Bill O'Reilly's favorite word), but here goes:

The magazine cover from hell should be treated as manna from heaven. In shocking people with so many fierce images at once, the New Yorker has handed Barack Obama an opportunity to score three timely victories.

First, progressives who feel betrayed by his increasingly centrist positions have been yanked back to his side. No matter how passionately Obama explains his stances on wire-tapping or withdrawing from Iraq, his words won't be the red meat that inflammatory visuals are.

Of late, activists have needed their hearts stirred by hardened more combat. The New Yorker is helping Obama consolidate his base at exactly the right moment.

Second, his campaign can now insist that the media, including liberal organs, aren't uniformly treating their candidate with kid gloves. That claim will be valuable when trying to win sympathy from journalists in future negotiations.

This unexpected deposit in the Democratic pity bank arrives not a minute too soon: Rolling Stone and Newsweek, major publications catering to key constituencies of Obama, have just released issues with him gracing their covers in glowing light.

Finally, the New Yorker debacle could make Obama a stronger candidate by forcing him to deal more intelligently with the rumor that he's a covert Muslim -- and deal with it while he still has time. Yes, yes, I know that even if he was Muslim, the proper response ought to be a big, booming "So what?"

But that doesn't mean Obama can settle for audaciously hoping that the truth will prevail. Truth is, the Muslim rumor ain't going away. Republicans will make hay of it in the coming months and Obama had best be prepared.

A controversial magazine cover gives him the chance to affirm his patriotism. He doesn't have to continue denying a rumor, only to keep it alive. Rather, Obama can develop armor by emphasizing his love of the most authentic American value there is: free expression.

On Tuesday night, he began down this road by telling CNN's Larry King that a cartoon like is "why we have the First Amendment." I wish Professor Obama would have personalized the message. Here's what I can imagine:

"However hurt Michelle and I feel, we embrace American ideals and would never stand in the way of free speech. We ask only for responsible expression. As the entire nation knows, I'm a champion of responsibility, whether in the African-American community or in the journalistic community."

Judging from public comments about the cartoon on the HuffPost, many of Obama's supporters would think this statement too subtle for average Americans. Notice that I said "many," not "all" or even "most." Some of you will agree that we can afford to show more faith in Americans, which requires getting aggressively intelligent with them.

After all, it's because America has brains that Obama could deliver a nuanced address about race relations and receive wide public acclaim for doing so. Far from talking down to folks, he proved that the country can handle complexity.

And remember: Obama made that elegant speech amid another media swirl -- sparked by his then-pastor, Jeremiah Wright. In responding, he aimed to transcend the vulgar polarities of Black versus White, Left versus Right.

He hit the mark, managing to contrast himself not only with the partisans who screamed that the sky was falling, but also with the caricature of their candidate that they dreaded would be spun by Republicans.

Barack Obama can confound the spinners and screamers again. That means viewing the New Yorker cartoon as a gift. Otherwise his own campaign will be succumbing to the very title of said cartoon: "The Politics of Fear."

I don't think I recall so much being made of a candidates religious beliefs since John Kennedy. Then everyone was worried about Catholics taking over the world! If after all the drama concerning Rev. Wright and Obama's former Christian church, a person still believes he is a Muslim, THEY ARE STUPID and don't deserve to vote anyway. Those kind of people have subscriptions to the likes of National Enquirer and their vote could never be swayed. If we don't get a handle on the separation of church and state, we are going to end up on a boat to the UK where they have freedom of religion. HA. History does repeat it self.

You say that the Muslim rumor will never go away, but then you say -"The New Yorker debacle could make Obama a stronger candidate by forcing him to deal more intelligently with the rumor that he's a covert Muslim "--

Your "more intelligently" presumes that up until now he hasn't, so, what do you consider this to be? How else can he fight the rumor, but by telling everyone it's false? He has always said, with all due respect to those who are Muslim, that HE IS NOT. CNN went to Indonesia, confirmed the school was not a madrassa, we know his father had converted to Islam, but wasn't practicing, and anyway he never lived with the man, we know his stepfather was muslim, but how does that make Obama Muslim? He's been telling people he found Christianity as an adult, and that's what he is now.
All the facts that break down that rumor have been laid out for everyone to see.
So, please, I'm really curious, what to you is exactly a "more intelligently" way of dealing with it?

CNN (The Clinton News Network) initially went to Indonesia to PROVE (not disprove) that Obama had attended a madrassa.............. And to their surprise they were proved WRONG.

For all of the MSM, Obama is just a means to an end for higher ratings and profits - Consider how much time was spent on "Rev Wright", "Bittergate", and "Proud of My Country" and even his "Bowling Score" and "Arugula".

They stalk Obama waiting for a "gaffe" of sorts, and VOILA........ days and days of meaningless coverage.

McCain could walk in the middle of a highway totally naked, and the MSM won't even bat an eye, much less cover the event ........... The MSM have obviously made a deliberate decision NOT to cover any McCain gaffes that would hurt his chances to become POTUS............. Just think of how many they let slide by................... Only Huffington and Keith Olberman ever cover McCain's gaffes, flip-flops, distortions, lies, and foul language.

They don't want Obama to be President, but they do want their profits to increase, and OBAMA-WATCH is just a means to an end for them.

Irshad's wish for Professor Obama (er, Dukakis?) to speak more forcefully and personally is one I share, and he'll have to do a great deal of this since the media hawk-eyes are peeled. In the run-up to Obama's trip abroad, one could see the gleam and zeal in the eyes of Andrea Mitchell (NBC/MSNBC), Jeff Greenfield (CBS), the entirety of CNN's anchors and "senior" reporters, plus all the rest virtually predicting and forewarning an Obama "slip-up" or failure of this McClinton-scripted Commander-in-Chief Test. In fact, these media pundits (not dispassionate reporters, just ratings-pushers as tel8034 said) will CREATE the "gaffe" through some twist of audio or video that may be in a different tense or number than something said in the primaries. A possible reprieve may be in the form of PM al-Maliki's invitation for U.S. troops to leave ASAP, but the media may yet twist that into a blunder, rather than a breakthrough.

I'm aware of all that. I know CNN was hoping to prove, but got 'disproved'. I know the MSM deal and all. But Irshad Manji wants to credit the NYer with giving Obama a chance to deal " more intelligently" with something, as if he hasn't been doing it all along.
I'm trying to understand, is this blogger just another one of those blind defenders of the NYer? Or does she REALLY have a "more intelligent " suggestion for Obama?

That's my point, the NYer just slapped that racist cover on the whole world's face, then, they expects Obama to make something positive out of it. That's ridiculous to me!

To me the only good thing that may have came from that cover was something O said on Larry King, which was, the New Yorker magazine cover was offensive to Muslim American's, something he himself has been negligent in pointing out. Many people in the media commented he needs to lighten up and be more "humorous". Yeah right, had Obama made light and found humor in that cover, the media would have accused him of being Insensitive towards Muslim Americans.

I don't buy that Obama is suddenly sensitive to Muslim American's, he himself has been insulting Muslim Americans with the way his campaign has tried to dissociate from the 'smear' of being a Muslim. It was a political tactic, responding to the New Yorker cover by bringing that up. This is all politics and he is a politician. A better one than McCain but still a politician.

"suddenly sensitive"-? You're wrong, he's always been, Larry King is probably the only time YOU heard it, but he has said that everytime from the beginning of the campaign, when he was asked that in an interview. YouTube, if you care, you'll find plenty.

Here's my idea. Joe Six-Pack (beer, conservative) and Joe One-Pack (wine, liberal) buy the New Yorker with the Obama cover, one to save it, the other to trash it. They open the magazine to the article by Benjamin Wallace-Wells on quantum physics. They read. Their heads explode. Problem solved.

You make some good points but everything you say is based upon the intelligence of people generally. This would have made me drop the New Yorker if I hadn' t already done that after it began featuring George Packer who is as smarmy and basically dishonest a NeoCon as you'll find who hasn't been directly employed by Bush (and I wonder if that does exclude George).

That is actually one of Obama's great strengths. Yes, lot's of Americans are dumb as dirt, but he doesn't speak down to them. We here in the, ugh, "blogosphere", tend to over simplify our fellow Americans, both to our and their detriment. You can accomplish a lot by treating people with respect, Obama is living proof.

One of my first thoughts when I saw this cover was that it was a win/win for Obama. It would breathe life back into the progressives who were on a respirator from the speeches (faith-based orgs anyone?) and vote (FISA) and strange regret (girls interview was a mistake?) of the week before. They could rally around their man once again. And the independents and conservatives with an ounce of sense would get a laugh at the lies.

There are still those who passionately believe with the cores of their being that Obama is a muslim and they will see it and think the New Yorker finally figured things out. And that's sad.

Obama and Michelle will be fine. They knew this would be a bruising campaign and, fortunately, they are both tough. They've kind of had to be, growing up black (and successful) in America. Power to them.

I certainly would never have characterized the cartoon and it's negative response as "manna from heaven", but you have presented an argument that convinces me that something positive can result from the debacle. Thanks for bringing out these points. You just may be right, after all. If not, at least I feel a little better about the possibilites.

Wow! You've expressed ideas I've been thinking since "the cover" appeared; only much better than I could have done. I've also thought that if liberals can't embrace irony, which in this case was really hitting the right wing Republicans, for fear of reinforcing a stupid notion, then maybe we will get the government we deserve.

You write that the Muslim rumors won't go away. I disagree. Why would anyone still seriously think he's Muslim when the whole world knows about his (now former) reverend and church? Yes, Wright is a reverend, not an imam. One would have to be extremely thick (and live behind the moon) to still think he's a Muslim.

Its clear that you don't live anywhere near the kinds of people that would still believe it. There are people in the world who will tell you in all seriousness that the moon landing was a hoax and that Obama is a muslim. And to see them on the street or meet them at church or school or work you won't be able to tell who they are, unless the subject comes up.

Sorry, but it seems you didn"t get the memo; racist White Americans are thick headed, hence voting wedge issues like god, guns and abortion, rather than their own self interest. What have republicans done for this group economically for the past 3 administrations they were in charge?

People will believe what they want to believe. Most voters have already made up their minds about Obama. There is nothing he can say to change their minds one way or the other.

Wrong! Whether in favor, against or not sure - people's minds can change as they have in other elections. Voters are very fickle as you probably saw during Obama's stance on FISA, late term abortion and faith based initiatives. How many people went crazy over that threatening to not donate, vote, etc.
