A Day Trip to the Real Happiest Place on Earth

What's Your Reaction:

A few months ago I felt that itching feeling coming up again, the one we all get from time to time beckoning us to bail out of Los Angeles for a bit. I just wanted to feel more connected to nature than my weekly 45-minute trek up Runyon Canyon. After some mild searching on line, I found what I now consider the real "happiest place on earth." This is no Disney excursion that will put you back $250 to enter and $100 to eat. Rather, this experience is offered on a donation-only basis and you will leave feeling so enriched, rested and at peace with the world that you will gladly repeat the trip up the 405 and 14 North the following Sunday too.

Welcome to Animal Acres. (text continues below)

When I pulled into the paradise of Animal Acres in Acton, a short 45 minutes north of Los Angeles, I knew that I found my home away from home. I was greeted by a lovely woman named Ciddy who was to be our tour guide for the weekly Sunday 11 am and 1 pm tours. She escorted us into the goat and sheep areas where we were greeted by dozens of these loving and adorable creatures who nuzzled and kissed us much like my golden retrievers at home. The tour commenced and we were all - families, babies, men, and women - taken through the 26 acres of land owned by Lorri Houston. Lorri is dedicated to rehabilitating and giving the rescued slaughterhouse farm animals the liberated and happy life they deserve. Unlike the local farmer's market petting zoos, Animal Acres allows the animals to live in their home environment. They roam the land and never are considered or treated as commodities. Consequently, children are able to experience a true connection with these creatures because they are in a stress free and serene situation.

While touring the beautiful grounds, we were able to hand-feed the cows and horses carrots, rub the pigs' bellies, and watch the hens and turkeys rule the roost as they spread their wings and sunbathe in the courtyard. It was clear that these sentient beings, who would have either been destined to be our dinner or our shoes, respond much like our cats and dogs do at home. Even though these animals were cruelty case rescues, the only thing they wanted to do was give and get love from all of us.

As a child, I always knew that there was something special about animals, not just the family poodle or the outdoor cat that would saunter by our door at leisure. I always found something "other worldly" and peace provoking about what Animal Acre's calls our "furry and winged friends." Living in New York and Los Angeles the majority of my life, I had become quite disconnected from most living creatures other than the neighbor's Labrador and the "pocket- book dogs" at Barneys. The closest thing I saw to a cow was the chopped meat section at Whole Foods.

I have been back to Animal Acres many times since my first trip. I have brought those who eat meat, strict vegetarians, and friends on the fence. One thing is clear and consistent with all who visit - for just a few hours they feel connected. There is no denying when a chicken sits on your lap, nestles with you, and searches for your hand for pets and kisses, that there is something in all of these creatures that is worth a second glance.

As one who helped get it started & now a board member, I thank you for this wonderful article about Animal Acres. Lorri Houston & I dreamed of a farm sanctuary near Los Angeles to rescue farm animals and raise awareness to the media, the celebrities and, most importantly, the people like yourself who never get to meet these loving beings. One correction- Lorri Houston does not own the farm; the animals do, as it should be! Again, thank you for drawing attention to Animal Acres AND to the beautiful, sentient beings whom most think of only as "food" but who are actually so much more!

Thanks for raising awareness of this worthwhile venture.People need to know these type of places exist and are practically on our doorsteps.Your article will hopefully also make people think twice about what they are ingesting and make a conscious decision next time. It all comes down to a lack of imagination...if people could envisage what they put animals through just for a burger maybe we wouldn't need places like Animal Acres.

I did a vegan cooking demo at Animal Acres for their Compassionate Cooking Extravaganza last month. What an incredible experience!! Simply by spending a day there with the animals, my girlfriend decided to completely remove meat from her diet, and my other friend, who was in attendance, removed all animal products from her diet. It's a powerful place to say the least. Come out to the Hoe Down this Saturday (6/12) for more great speakers and some great food!!

Thank you for posting this article. Even though I live in SoCal and am vegan, I have yet to visit Animal Acres. I will soon. To be non-vegan or non-vegetarian, one has to operate in denial. One has to rationalize and to consider dogs and cats as pets and somehow different than other "consumable" animals. They're not. Humans are not. We are all imbued with the right to live. It doesn't matter whether or not we find animals cute or friendly. It doesn't matter if WE find value in their lives. They have value to THEMSELVES.

Michael Tomlinson has a song called, "Living Things": "Deep denial, you're the dragon, and we're the fragile, living things."

I love Animal Acres; they do a wonderful job of promoting animal rights awareness, as well as helping these traumatized animals to heal and find that they are loved :) also, check out the nearby sweetwater cafe if you ever visit, they have great food, and great vegan options as well!

My heaven on Earth....This is where I wish I could be buried....

love this story! The world needs more farm sanctuaries to help us reconnect with animals typically raised as food or commodities. Please keep posting these stories!! The ugly truth about factory farming is completely contrasted when we see the other side of these animals. Their true nature, and the compassion of the people rescuing and protecting them. Awareness is key to change. Please keep making the world aware of how forgiving and nurturing these animals are...despite the horrors they've known.

For those wanting to get involved after seeing the Conklin Dairy Farm videos, and the other horror stories that are out there, Animal Acres is truly a wonderful place to make a difference. Ciddy does a great job with the Sunday tours, all of which are kid friendly. The information given is accurate but she does a fantastic job of making it audience appropriate. It's also a great place for social events and gatherings. Highly recommend it!

Thank you for highlighting this joyous space of positivity, especially in light of the negativity surrounding the Conklin dairy farm video. It helps everyone to know that there are those of us out there making strides to create a world of compassion!

Lovely to see this kind of rescue/sanctuary effort getting exposure. Farm animals need our voices and our compassion!
