I recall once watching President George Bush explain his personal and somewhat warped opposition to stem cell research. His 'logic' was he wasn't going to take a human life to try and save a life.
It was warped, but I understood where he stood.
Just like I understand where Ron Paul is on the war the other night when he was on CNN, clear and simple.
So last night, the United States Senate voted on whether or not Michael Mukasey should be our next Attorney General.
The problem with Mukasey, in a nut shell, is that he is going to be the top law enforcement officer in the United States, and he is unwilling to commit that waterboarding, clearly illegal and clearly torture, is something that he will stand up against and persecute those guilty of doing it.
I don't always agree with my friend John Kerry, but he was absolutely right in his post the other day:
Let's stand up as country and decide whether you are for torture or against it.
Well, it's hard to stand up as a country to have a moment like that when your United States Senators can't stand up.
Not Voting - 7Alexander (R-TN) Biden (D-DE) Clinton (D-NY)
Cornyn (R-TX) Dodd (D-CT)
McCain (R-AZ) Obama (D-IL)
Hmm, I notice a pattern here. Anyone else?
You're going to be President of the United States? You're going to answer the call of duty and make the tough decisions?
Prove it.
Stand up and vote.

They all do a lot of talking, but don't actually say anything, they lack the necessary principles, honour and integrity to stand up and oppose that which is not the American way and in so doing demonstrate the weak, dithering, uncertain leadership they would bring to the office of President of the USA.
I guess you don't always get what you pay for!
Never thought I'd type these words, but in defense of Biden, Clinton, Dodd, Obama AND McCain...
Running for president is a full-time job. Now you might say, but that's not what WE pay them for! We pay them to vote on these things! And of course, you'd be right.
But they're between a rock and a hard place. To have a viable chance of winning the presidency, they have to campaign in key primary states, such as New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina. Every day.
And, they also have to conduct their business in Congress.
But they can't always do both, especially when there's an extremely ineffectual Senate Majority Leader who calls votes on short notice (not the first time he's done that).
So they can wait around for Reid to decide it's time to vote, but if they do, they may be hurting their chances with primary voters by missing a campaign event.
But, if they miss a key vote, they risk outrage by constituents.
I guess when you run for president, you have to accept that you're always going to piss somebody off, and that while you may end up getting the job, at the same time you just can't win.
Someone should ask the presidential candidates whether they think a person with a history of skipping work any day that their job might be, you know, hard, is really the kind of person the voters should elect to public office. Or for that matter, hire for any kind of job.
How about some disdain for Sen. Reid who let this come to a vote when it was going to be so close. Was there absolutely no hope of persuasion that would've warranted delaying this vote? At the minimum those that were away could've made it back for the vote. I swear I don't know how Harry and Nancy got to where they are, because it sure as hell doesn't look like they know what they're doing!
Take a look at this over at Daily Kos
http://www
Evidently, Reid called the vote knowing that as many as three (3) nays were out of town, which may have resulted in a filibuster.
The vote was hurriedly called at 11 p.m. Thursday night, according to Brent Budowski at The Hill. http://pun
So maybe the leadership problem is Reid.
Really, how much more of this sh*t do they expect us to accept?
Well, I am done with the party in which I once trusted to represent my interests. I will not contribute to, or support another Democrat after the cowardly, self-serving and immoral behavior that they have demonstrated. The argument can no longer be made that a vote for a third party (Green, Libertarian, LaRouchie, extraterrestrial etc.) is a wasted voted. I now apologize to Ralph Nader for every four-letter word I directed at him in the past.
Maybe they are just hedging their bets: Kind of like not being able to give any absolute assurance that we will be out of Iraq before 2013, if then.
If we're still in Iraq we may still need the enhanced interrogations to find those WMD's....
Typical Knee-Jerk Reaction.
I don't know about the rest of them, but Biden voted against Mukasey in the Judiciary Committee. Was it really that important that he be there to cast a symbolic vote in the senate? Mukasey had the votes (53 of them). He was going to be confirmed. Biden was already on record. So, your criticism of him carries absolutely no weight.
.
Hey now James,
Dodd is a regular blogger on the HufPo and you know about the HufPo policy about being kind to HufPo bloggers and all.
But seriously.
Where are their orbs?
.
How many mornings are we going to wake up saying Shame! Shame! They all should have been back in DC for this vote. When are the candidates going to stand up and be counted? In some notable cases there seems to be a concerted effort to avoid the important votes on the part of the 2 supposed frontrunners on the Democratic side.
I have got to agree. I am sick of these people hovering over a minefield instead of doing what they think is right for the country.
The question as to whether Mukasey is irrelavant. It is not his job as AG to define the law. It is his job as AG to enforce the law, regarless of his personal views. I am sure every AG in the past has had his/her own views on the laws, and probably didn't always agree with the law, but they had to enforce it none the less. One thing that those who are for or against Mukasey can agree on is that throughout his career, he has always acted in accordance to what the law states, not to what he feels, which is what you want in in AG.
That's absolutely *NOT* what Senator Kerry said.
He said: Let us decide if those who have broken the law by torturing get a *Get out of Jail Free" card!
Make *NO* mistake about it!
Thank you for this, James.
