I hate Washington, D.C. And I'm perfectly willing to admit it. In fact, I consider it a badge of honor that I wear with pride. It sometimes makes meetings with the consultant class down there a touch awkward at first but c'est la vie.
Yesterday Mark Warner made what I see as a terrific decision. He has spent virtually the entire year on the road away from his family and he looked into the cauldron of a Presidential Campaign, realized what it would mean to his family and his daughters and he blinked.
From my past conversations with him and through conversations with members of his team over the past twenty-four hours, I have heard nothing other than the truth as it was in his statement on his PAC website. From my previous understanding of the timeline that he had laid out for a final decision, he stuck to it. End of story.
But out of DC, the rumors immediately started flying and to me, they are disgusting and they are spreading and it makes me sick. Because I believe Mark Warner and I believe in what he said publicly and what he said privately because it is exactly the same.
But in the cesspool that is DC, no one can believe that someone would walk away from a race because of his family. They are so obsessed with power, they just can't see it happening.
Well, it just did. Deal with it.
Soon, Mark Warner and his family will drive their daughter to her first year of college. He will be like any father unpacking and setting up a dorm room. He will be there and not in a fundraiser or giving a speech somewhere. Guess what? He wins.
I hope we see you next year at YearlyKos Governor, I'll save a box lunch and a seat on the floor for you. Peace.
